Olympic style drills and combinations

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any combinations that they like to use for Olympic style sparring, or drills for improving kicking and reaction times?

I have been doing more kicking paddle work, but as I am kind of short, I have to cut a lot of angles. I want to use a spin hook/heel kick, but I need to speed up the timing.

I like crescents as well, both inside and out. I have been trying a front leg round/front leg outer crescent, or the same combo starting off the back leg.

What do you like, and what has been successful for you?

Turning kick hook kick-same leg.

Sprint double turning kick.

Back kick hook kick-same leg

Wheel kick back kick-same leg

Wheel kick turning kick-same leg

Push kick axe kick

Consecutive turning kicks-low/high

Pop up back kick while inside-very good for short people like me!

Turning kick hook kick-same leg.

Do you set your leg down between kicks here?

Sprint double turning kick.

I assume this is with alternating legs, right?

Back kick hook kick-same leg

Wheel kick back kick-same leg

Wheel kick turning kick-same leg

Are these done by spinning twice? IE, do one spin kick, then the other, setting down briefly between kicks?

Consecutive turning kicks-low/high

I assume this is without setting the foot down, right?

Pop up back kick while inside-very good for short people like me!

The "pop up" is confusing to me here. Could you elaborate some more?

Thanks, although it looks like I just made more work for you!

I appreciate the reply!

I've always liked outside to inside crescent immediately followed by a side kick. Although, more occasions than not I end up planting the crescent kick to the head first.

That is cool. I want to utilize my crescent kicks more, but I am fairly short, so I am trying to find ways to move in and use them, or to counter with them. I can use a spin outer crescent counter, but I want to incorporate the others as well.

One thing we have been doing in class that is a challenge and strengthens the hip movement is to do inside-to-outside hip rotation (like sweep kick w/o snap) and without putting foot on the floor (if you can), bring it back in the reverse motion outside-to-inside (like crescent kick w/o snap) then switch form fast and do the same with the other leg.

I'll tell you, 5 or 6 reps of this is tiring, if done with the widest range of motion you have, as quickly as you can. It's also a coordination challenge, if you ask me, to do this very quickly.

This works the hip through the range of motions like you'd use with sweep or crescent kicks, and helps with strengthening when doing the dual motion. Single motion (either in-out or out-in) is a normal warmup movement for loosening up the hipjoints, but the double movement is much harder.

Turning kick, hook kick: No do not set leg down-hit one side of head then the other

Sprint double turning kick:yes alternating legs, using the oppponents own body to spring off of for the second one

Back kick hook kick-one spin, do not set foot down

Wheel kick back kick-two spins (1st one returns you to your starting position), put foot down briefly

Wheel kick turning kick-two motions (1st one returns you to your starting position), putting foot down briefly

Consecutive turning kicks-do not set foor down

Pop up back kick: pop up kicks are down from the guarding stance by bending the knees, jumping straight up (hence "pop") and executing the kick. The back kick requires a half spin in the air.

Hope that clarifies!
