Syphax Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 (edited) First off, this joke is not aimed at anyone person or tournament. I have just been to a few tournaments that were, let's say, not good.Joke:Jacob was six years old when he attended his first karate tournament. He and his mother arrived and got ready for his competition. Jacob's mother noticed that the tournament seemed to be very hectic and the schedule was backed up by at least an hour. She walked the to officials table and asked if there was anything she could do to help out. The man replied that they needed an extra fighter in the women's division to even things up. Jacob's mother told him she couldn't, since she didn't study martial arts, her son did. "Oh, that's ok," said the official. "We need judges too."One more time, this is not directed at any, or even most tournaments. There are just those few... Edited October 23, 2006 by Syphax
bushido_man96 Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 It sometimes seems that way. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
dragonwarrior_keltyr Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Oh gosh! I haven't gone to many tournaments but I hate tournament lag! I was there at 9 and didn't fight until 4. By that time I was all worn out from the stress. External training without the training of the mind is nothing

patusai Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 I suppose it is kinda like judging diving when a "fill in" judge only knows the basics of diving (jump off the board and go into the water). I imagine other sports with fill in judges experience this too. "Don't tell me the sky's the limit because I have seen footprints on the moon!" -- Paul Brandt

We've had parents be judges, and of course, if they're kids are fairly new they have no idea what they're doing. It was nice when we had "black belt moms" who'd watched karate for 6 years or so and could almost teach it External training without the training of the mind is nothing
aefibird Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 It was nice when we had "black belt moms" who'd watched karate for 6 years or so and could almost teach it I actually know one "black belt mum" who WAS asked to help judge a competition but who had never trained. Her eldest son is a sucessful kata competitor and a 2nd Dan and her other son and daughter are both high grade karateka too. It was only a little local tournament between 4-5 schools, but the judges were really short-handed. One guy had had his nose broken in the fighting and couldn't stick around to judge the kata and another lady had gone home early with sickness. So Karen (the Black Belt Mum) was the "best of the rest". As she's been around a dojo so long she probably knows as much as the rest of us anyway! She did quite a good job of it too, very fair. Maybe that's the way forward for competitions - use the Mum Army...! "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." The Beautiful South - The Rose of My CologneSheffield Steelers!
