rogue2257 Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 In my unending effort to further my knowledge of all things martial arts, I've recently been working on sai kata. Unfortunately, I'm the only one at my school that practices with them and finding new kata is a pain. I picked up Katsumi Murakami's book Saijutsu, but it didn't help a whole lot.I know that its better to learn from an instructor, but what I'm really hoping here is that someone will help me out and either describe or link me to some videos... I do have a strong grasp on sai usage, its just that trying to find new forms is so very frusterating. And yes, I know I can do any open hand kata with sai, but what I'm looking for here is sai specific kata.Anyway, if anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it. I'd be more than happy to swap katas with someone if need be...
bushido_man96 Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 You may want to look into some books and/or videos by Fumio Demura. I have a book by him on the bo, and I know he has one on the sai as well. It may have a kata in it (hopefully not the one you know!). https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
lordtariel Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 I haven't started the sai yet so i can't help you too much. Here's a list of kata's listed in the wiki. At least it will give you a starting point for searching:Tsukenshitahaku no SaiHamahiga no SaiYaka no SaiHantaguwaKojoTawataChatanyara no SaiManji no SaiJigen no SaiTry searching for these terms on google video, youtube and other video sites. If you have a strong grip on the fundamentals, you might be able to pick something up this way. There's no place like 127.0.0.1
rogue2257 Posted October 10, 2006 Author Posted October 10, 2006 Unfortunately, nothing useful on youtube... bassai dai and jion done with zai, nothing I haven't seen before. Chatanyara is there, but the video is so old that I'm not sure it's useful.I'm gonna keep lookin on google, as suggested. Appreciate the help guys. It would definately still be great if somone could link me to something of substance.
lougacs Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 If you click on the 2nd video of this link...http://proxy.ee.kent.ac.uk/~cpb2//RHKKF/You will see "Nakamura no Sai" being taught by Sekichi Odo the late Grandmaster of Okinawan Kenpo; respectfully, Lou
rogue2257 Posted October 10, 2006 Author Posted October 10, 2006 Interesting... I think that that's the kata I know as Tawada. The pattern is too similar. There's a few things that are different in what I do, I assume just the difference between styles. That is helpful though, thank you. I just wish I had a sped up version so I could watch it at full speed. There has to be more out there though... its so hard to find anything. I would be best friends forever with the person that uploads a couple kata onto youtube.
Neo Dragon Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Man where did you find that website? I was looking around on it and I found all kinds of stuff. I saw several weapons including the Naginata wich is gosh near imposible to find anything on, and theyve got about half of a whole sword system in one spot.
rogue2257 Posted November 3, 2006 Author Posted November 3, 2006 Hm... its interesting. No doubt about that. I'm still bemoaning the fact that I can't find hardly anything on sai kata online...
Neo Dragon Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 course if ya think about it its hard to find any type of Kata online. Most instructors dont want to show off there Kata for fear of people "stealing them". Or learning them for free, so I think thats why things are hard to find.
lordtariel Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Found these:http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sai+kata&search=Search There's no place like 127.0.0.1
