Any Ishinryu Karate books out there?

Recommended Posts

Just got home, yep, my sensei confirmed this and also pointed me to 2 books for ishinryu karate, or at least written by Ticky Donovan OBE:

Traditional Karate by Ticky Donovan OBE (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Traditional-Karate-Pelham-Practical-Sports/dp/0720718279/sr=8-10/qid=1160418853/ref=sr_1_10/026-6445738-1940415?ie=UTF8&s=books) &

Winning Karate by Ticky Donovan OBE (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Winning-Karate-Pelham-Practical-Sports/dp/0720715350/sr=8-19/qid=1160418979/ref=sr_1_19/026-6445738-1940415?ie=UTF8&s=books) both published by Pelham books.

There are several good books out there and videos as well.

Even though I am not a fan of Harold Long's video series...his book "Isshinryu Karate: the ultimate fighting art" is a pretty good read. Some of the views expressed in it are limited, but all in all its a good book.

Also...Steve Armstrong's "Isshinryu Karate: The One Heart Method" is pretty good as well...at least for getting to know a bit about the personal side of Tatsuo Shimabuku. The dramatized section of the book are pretty dorky though...good thing that is only about 10 percent of the book.

As far as video's go...Harold Mitchum's is fantastic, though pricey. 80 bucks for all eight open hand katas. But these videos are far superior to what Masters Uezu and Long put out. The bunkai sections of Mitchum's video are extremely well done.

There are several other videos out there that are decent, but most are pricey...especially for what you get. I pretty much look at ebay all of the time and if something decent pops up, I get it.

I have Okinawa's Complete Karate System by Michael Rosenbaum. Though I personally do not study Isshin-ryu (I study Shobayashi Shorin-ryu by Tatsuo's brother Eizo), the book has an excellent accounting of the history and philosophy of Okinawan martial arts as well as loads of great info on Shimabuku and Isshin-ryu. I highly recommend it.

Thanks guys/gals for all your answers. I've decided to get the vid's that Ticky Donovan OBE did and his books, as his was the one that start Ishinryu (not to be confused with Isshin Ryu) :)

Hopefully I'll be able to grasp this art and get my Shodan in this style also. Only time will tell, I'm still a bit out of shape, but I'm being postive.

I had forgotten that there was a style with such a close name...

Boy, you gotta wonder why someone would name their style something that close to an already popular style. Would be like starting a style and calling it Kung Foo, or Tie Kwon do.

To each his own I guess.

Huh. I didn't realize there was a separate art with a similar name.
