rabid hamster
Does hapkido use weapons, and if so, what weapons and at what level do you start using them? Chris from CT
We use quite a few weapons in Hapkido. Knife, cane, Dan Bong (Short Stick - approx. 12"), Ji Bong (Mid stick - arnis sized), double Ji Bong, Ban Bong (Jo Staff Size), belt/rope and fan. Some also teach sword and long staff. Different weapons are taught by different instructors and associations. Some more or less than others. When they are taught also depends on the instructor and/or association. rabid hamster
Fan? What kind of weapon is that. As in, like, is it a stick, sword, etc? Also, do you think taekwondo and hapkido would be a good combination of arts to practice? It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, for the most essential things are invisible to the eye. A fan like you would use if it was hot outside to cool yourself off. The ones we use, the spines of the fan are made out of stainless steel instead of plastic. Altough Hapkido is a full range martial art that can stand on its own, yes it would be a good combination. Hapkidodude
Hapkido also is a good mix with a ground fighting art. At our dojang we mixed in some BJJ techniques. They work well in conjunction with the throwing/takedown techniques. It is a natural progression to finish off the opponent. BrettThe Hand is quicker than the eye! ZR440
And those spiney fans don't need to be jammed into someone to be effective. Folded up they are used to slap pressure points. They don't look like much of a weapon, but you don't want to get hit by one either. It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
tessone
Fans are one of the coolest things about Korean martial arts, I think. The demonstrations I've seen are amazing. Chris TessoneBrown Belt, Kuk Sool Won

So as from what I know hapkido teaches throwing, but does it also teach you how to fight if you end up on the ground? k, thank you. rabid hamster
Well looks like no one could answer my last question. But, I've found two hapkido schools that are really close by to me. http://www.prmaa.com http://www.modernhapkido.com By just looking at the site, which one seems to be a better place? on the modern hapkido site, if you go to events, you will see that they went to a hapkido weapons tournment, but I always thought hapkido didnt have tournments? And what's the difference between regular hapkido and "modern" hapkido? That is if there is any. Thank you very much.
