Jiffy Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Many people have told me before of school that don't like you cross training. I too have come across these myself, but not for a long time and not uppon looking for a school. For the first time, I've just had someone tell me that they would not be interested in teaching me because I train in other styles.Unfortunately, this was the only Aikido school left in my area that suited my schedule. Time to look for another style.... The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it's open.
alsey Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 some people really need to get rid of some ego and open up. to turn away any student is refusing an opportunity to learn more, and no one is good enough to do that IMO. i've never encountered an instructor like that myself, must be annoying when it happens. good luck finding another school "Gently return to the simple physical sensation of the breath. Then do it again, and again, and again. Somewhere in this process, you will come face-to-face with the sudden and shocking realization that you are completely crazy. Your mind is a shrieking, gibbering madhouse on wheels." - ven. henepola gunaratana
Zorbasan Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 hehe, join the TKD world, you will hear it all the time.its crap that some people could be so close minded Now you use head for something other than target.
bushido_man96 Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 hehe, join the TKD world, you will hear it all the time.its crap that some people could be so close mindedDo you think this is the case for most TKD schools? My instructor is this way as well. The only way I was able to take up Combat Hapkido is because he got his 1st dan in it. If he wouldn't have been teaching it, I would not have had a chance to learn it. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
jeff5 Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Everyone should cross train to some degree in my opinion. Its not until relatively recently (the last 100 years or so), that martial arts has become so dogmatized. Tradtionally students went and learned varied styles from different masters. Why should we be any different?
Jiffy Posted September 13, 2006 Author Posted September 13, 2006 Two reasons..... Ego and Income. That's the main two reasons instructors are closed minded towards cross training. The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it's open.
Zorbasan Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 i think ego is a bigger one. most places charge monthly so if you dont come to a lesson a week it really doesnt make much difference to them. Now you use head for something other than target.
Jiffy Posted September 13, 2006 Author Posted September 13, 2006 Yeah, but a lot do charge based on how many lessons you are doing with them. If you are doing two styles with them, they get more money. They would rather you do that then give them half your money and give the other half to someone else. The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it's open.
Shogun of Harlem Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 If that is there attitude then they dont deserve your hard earned $ anyway
bushido_man96 Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 All the talk about the ego and such that makes instructors want to control where one trains makes me glad that MMA have come along to show the benefits of being able to apply the strengths of various styles to make up for the lack of other styles. It makes me wish there was an MMA school to train in around my area. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
