KickChick Posted May 4, 2002 Posted May 4, 2002 Here is an excellent website. Check it out! The image is a panoramic view of the world from the new space station. It is a night photo with the lights clearly indicating the populated areas. You can scroll East-West and North-South. Note that Canada's population is almost exclusively along the US border. Moving east to Europe, there is a high population concentration along the Mediterranean Coast. It's easy to spot London, Paris, Stockholm and Vienna. Check out the development of Israel compared to the rest of the Arab countries. Note the Nile River and the rest of the "Dark Continent." After the Nile, the lights don't come on again until Johannesburg. Look at the Australian Outback and the Trans-Siberian Rail Route. Moving east, the most striking observation is the difference between North and South Korea. Note the density of Japan. What a piece of photography! It is an absolutely awesome picture of the Earth taken from the Boeing built Space Station on a perfect night with no obscuring atmospheric conditions. http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0011/earthlights_dmsp_big.jpg <http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0011/earthlights_dmsp_big.jpg>
tessone Posted May 4, 2002 Posted May 4, 2002 I think someone showed me this a few months ago, but I'd forgotten all about it. Thanks for the post, KickChick! Looking at all the lights in Russia really makes me miss it. I lived there for three and a half months last year, and I think I can spot Krasnodar, where I lived... YODA Posted May 4, 2002 Posted May 4, 2002 Great pic - something strange though - how come the whole world is night? Surely it's always day somewhere? VERY cool pic though! Amazing how many small islands are fully lit up too! _________________ YODA KarateForums Sempai 2nd Degree Black Belt : Doce Pares Eskrima https://www.docepares.co.uk Qualified Instructor : JKD Concepts https://www.jkdc.co.uk Qualified Fitness Instructor (Weights, CV, Circuit, Kinesiology) [ This Message was edited by: YODA on 2002-05-04 03:29 ] YODA2nd Degree Black Belt : Doce Pares Eskrima https://www.docepares.co.ukQualified Instructor : JKD Concepts https://www.jkdc.co.ukQualified Fitness Instructor (Weights, CV, Circuit, Kinesiology)

kicker Posted May 4, 2002 Posted May 4, 2002 Hey thats cool Kickchick. Well I wonder which place is using more power?? when you do your best it`s going to show. "If you watch the pros, You will learn something new"
tessone Posted May 4, 2002 Posted May 4, 2002 As far as I can tell, Japan is the single brightest spot. Of course, that doesn't necessarily correlate to power usage. Chris TessoneBrown Belt, Kuk Sool Won
Blade13 Posted May 12, 2002 Posted May 12, 2002 Thats really cool. I had no idea that Georgia had so many lights on.
SaiFightsMS Posted May 12, 2002 Posted May 12, 2002 I think the higher areas of light intensity correspond with the areas of high population density. That was a really cool link Kickchick, Yoda. I put both in a newly created folder in my bookmarks "cool stuff".
