My old instructor jim butin was great in his day and still is. #1"The road to tae kwan leep is an endless road leading into the herizon, you must fully understand its ways". #2"but i wanna wax the walls with people now" #1"come ed gruberman, your first lesson is here.....boot to the head" #2"ouch, you kicked me in the head", #1"you learn quickly ed gruberman"
Ripper Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 I have done the same in similar cases, Neo. Does this mean I'm a master and in harmony with my mind and body?? I don't think so. Did I do that way because I've trained karate for a zillion years?? I don't think so. It's just a part of my character. And no, I did not get that character because of training in karate. Karate does not necessarily perfect ones character, at least not more than for example baseball. That character largely comes from my parents, the people I grew up with and my upbringing. René
Drunken Monkey Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 why does 'master' mean something supernatural? post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
kotegashiNeo Posted February 4, 2004 Posted February 4, 2004 So martial arts creates no discpline then ripper is that what you are saying, curious I thought it did but clearly I was wrong so was Funikoushi, Jigaro Kano Kisshu fushin oni te hotoke kokoro
blitzcraig Posted February 4, 2004 Posted February 4, 2004 Why is oklahoma so limited in its MA schools. All we mainly have that I know of is Karate-normal, TKD, and BBJ. There are a few Kung fu and aikido/judo schools. I want to learn like Gojo-ryu or shotokan or something like that....not kick the pad do TKD forms out of a book!
Ripper Posted February 7, 2004 Posted February 7, 2004 why does 'master' mean something supernatural?I don't know where you are from, but if you are from England, you might have seen the serie Fighting school. If you have........need I say more??? René
Drunken Monkey Posted February 7, 2004 Posted February 7, 2004 and you believe all you see in the media? and no, i haven't seen it. as a rule i tend to stay away from martial arts programs because the ones that i have seen in the past have been to full of this 'mystical eastern' image that the producers seem to to pushing at the western world. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
Bdaze Posted February 7, 2004 Posted February 7, 2004 oi. can we please avoid argueing the meaning of the word Master? in this context it means that the person is the best there is at what they do, nothing super natural. they are the best or one of the best at a martial art and have passed it on to others honestly. it does us no good to say "there are no "masters" because a master must be perfect in all aspects of the art" that may be a good point under another context, but it still doesn;t answer the question If in your journey you encounter God, God will be cut ~Hatori Hanso (sonny chiba)

Exactly, that's all I was trying to make clear. I'm glad you feel the same. I hope others also feel this way. René

You don't do that when you are talking about Michael Jordan, Carl Lewis or any other athlete. That would sound kind of ridiculous, wouldn't it? René
