hello, I was watching TV last night and there was a thing about fighting.

then it said if you hit at the right spot hard enough (i think it was a litte under the heart) that your oponents heart would slow down or even stop.

Has anyone heared about this?

"Sword-Chucks yo."

Yes, thanks a lot guys.  Hey, kamasandsais, that was something that you knew that I did not!!

It is not such a sure thing as that. If you hit the sternum with sufficient force, you *may* stop the heart. That is why some of the younger baseball leagues require players to wear a small chest protector. So it could happen, but you should not count on it in a real fight.

hehe, sounds like the "dim mak"

Now you use head for something other than target.

As mentioned. It has been known to stop the heart, but the chance of using it in a real fight, on purpose, is slim.

Actually, what occurs is that the strike to the chest causes the heart to fibrillate, and go out of its normal rhythym. If a defibrillator is not used quickly, the person will go into cardiac arrest and likely expire.

This strike must occur at a very specific point in the heart rate cycle, so not any punch will cause this to occur.

I think that there is a misconception there...

If you actually hit the heart then like Sohan said; you'll cause the heart to fibrillate, but aiming under the heart is not what i've heard before.

If you were to punch where the Aorta is, then you'll be able to shut off a small supply of blood, which could cause some of the cells to starve of oxygen, causing death... (could being the word... not entirely proven, just theoritcal)

I'm not really sure... It's not something that I would go out and try... In this stage, its all theoritical and so we can guess where it is until somebody tries it... Until then, we have our opinions... (Not sounding biased towards this... just staying mutal...) :)

I'm sure it's possible to kill somebody with that move but, as others have pointed out, the operative word is "possible." Still, a strike to the solar plexus is a very effective move. It may not kill your opponent but it should stop him from wanting to fight you, at least until he gets his breath back.

There are many various factors that can be placed on this "area" along with the "technique" used for the strike. Most strikes can cause effects like what sohan mentioned. You can also break bones that can puncture the heart or nearby arteries, you could possibly sever an artery and cause massive internal bleeding similar to the use of a spear hand to the armpit (in some schools) or pinch an artery like shui tora was saying as seen in a triangle choke hold or sleeper hold...cut off the blood flow to the brain creating a pocket of air?? in the blood flow and cause unconsciousness?? there are many various factors for each technique depending on the specific target.....could also be a nerve, pressure point, vital point, a meridean or something like that....but i have heard that a palm strike will make the heart skip a beat, if you strike it hard enough you can cause cardiac arrest. There was a show....not sure if it was ripleys believe it or not, or a similar show where they attached heart monitors to the uki/students and the instructor struck them and you could see the heart beat change dramatically....
