The other day, I went to class. I hadn't shaved and my hair was a little scraggy. One of my 10 year old students came up to me and in her most honest voice said "You look really old!"

HAHAHAHA, Kids are great!!

Have you had something like this?

Oh, yeah......Brutally honest, sometimes. It is the naivety that is refreshing, isn't it? I had an experience the opposite of you. I shaved my goatee and mustache (not that it was much to begin with) when I applied for my new job, and one of the chief instructor's little girls told me that I looked so much younger.

We actually had practice on halloween one year and before I left we had a trick or treater. I answered the door in my gi and it was this little kid dressed as a ninja. He tugged at his mom's sleeve and whispered really loudly "I think he's for real" I still get a kick out of it.

I have finally (mostly) grown into my ears, but before I did, I was doing a first intro lesson for this little girl, and I introduced myself to her, and she turned to her mom and said, "He looks like a monkey." That made me much less self-conscious about it. :D

Unfortunately, though I've grown into my ears, my Jewish three-times-broken nose is still rather prominent. Yesterday, I was demonstrating to a bunch of 8-10 year olds how to fall on the ground properly, and I asked them, "What would happen if I fell like this?" and knelt on my knees and elbows with my face toward the ground. One of the kids said, "You would hit your nose."

There went that lesson - we were all laughing so hard, it took me a minute or so to get them into learning mode again.

We have a ten year old in the dojo and one of the guys tried to sneak up on him. He turned around and they "wrestled" a little bit, but when asked how he could tell he was coming, the kid said "I could smell him coming. No one else in the world smells like that."

We all had a good laugh after that comment. :)

My instructor was having a halloween party at his school, and told the "little dragons" (under 7) that it was at 2:00. He finished with the typical "any questions?" The response he got was "What's 2:00?"

once a good friend of mine asked me what he could do to help his son learn martial arts. The kid was there and acted interested so i turned to the kid and said "it won't be easy, but i think the best thing you can do is practice holding a perfect fist for as long as you can holding perfectly still until you can do it for five minutes." the kid turned to his dad and said "i think i'll do soccer instead."

since then i have changed my approach to teaching kids. :dodgy:
