Something that a 3rd dan from Germany that I knew did was have the student draw the form he had learned on paper, with stick figures, and drawing the stances and where the techniques were landing. Kind of interesting, I thought.

I kind of like the idea. I wish they would give out the kata moves on paper. When my son was an orange belt he had to learn two katas. One he was doing right and the 2nd one he was practicing it with a couple of mistakes. I had no idea he wasn't doing it right since I don't know all the moves. It took him a while to do it the right way after practicing it wrong for a while.

This is a tough situation here. If it were me, I would make sure the first form was down and memorized before going on to the next one, just to keep from confusing the students.

perhaps in the future they will have some kind of "learn to dance" program that can be incorporated into kata. it would use the same basic functions as "smart board" technology where you can directly interface with a computer simply by pressing on the board.

Most of our Kata, except the tekki kata, are based on an I formation on the floor. So we have tape on our wood floor in the shape of a large I and try to follow it. Works well.
