niel0092 Posted August 4, 2006 Posted August 4, 2006 This link is to an article written by my Kali instructor, Rick Faye, on the place of drills in training. I found it to be well thought out and a different take on what we see in current opinions on training. Take a look and see what you think.http://www.inosanto.com/article_info.php?articles_id=3&osCsid=252c85581b0356c0b100d4b85bd7ce29 "Jita Kyoei" Mutual Benefit and Welfare
bushido_man96 Posted August 4, 2006 Posted August 4, 2006 I think that is a very good article. I think that drilling is one of the most important and useful aspects of training used in the martial arts. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
alsey Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 i agree with what he said, but it was nothing new. "Gently return to the simple physical sensation of the breath. Then do it again, and again, and again. Somewhere in this process, you will come face-to-face with the sudden and shocking realization that you are completely crazy. Your mind is a shrieking, gibbering madhouse on wheels." - ven. henepola gunaratana
jaymac Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 I believe this article truly sums it up. I am very glad you posted it for everyone at the forum to read. No as Alsey put it, "It was nothing new," but it has been forgotten by many. With extreme and ultimate arts monopolizing the sports industry, I feel the true meaning of what it was like to train in a Martial Art has been lost by this new generation. I understand that there will always be changes, but keeping some things traditional would be beneficial to all students. A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.
bushido_man96 Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 I feel that drilling is not just a tradition, but absolutely necessary. In all the history of combat, soldiers drilled to learn. The Roman army did it excessively, and medieval warriors as well, in almost all cultures. Drills are the essence to learning anything, whether it is combat, football, soccer, or whatever. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
ps1 Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 I agree with the article. There isn't an art I've trained that we haven't drilled either. "It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenius."
