I use the jab more often then I use the backfist. It seems to flow in the combinations I use much more smoothly than the backfist can. However there are times during sparring when an opening for the backfist will arise and I can use it effectively.

Jab beats the backfist every time. So does a hammer fist. Or just a "left straight" ala Bas Rutten.

not every time. think back a few years in boxing. tommy hitman hearns was known for his "flicker jab" which was basically a mix of the jab and backfist. It was a whipping jab from a lowered lead hand.

I use the backfist to rattle people's brains in their heads, and jabs to distract them so that I can throw a hard right. I find jabs a little faster, and backunckles (as we call them) waaay more powerful. But I think it may change for the individual and the style.

generally i'll use a jab to try and create an opening. i wouldn't usually use a backfist unless there's an opening already there.

I scored on my sensei :o (a feat in of itself) by doing a grab & backfist the other night...very intense blow to the face.
