savedbygrace Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Honestly, I am not a bragger or think "highly" of myself but I am proud of the accomplishment I made in class. Our belt ranking system goes like this......white, yellow, blue, green, purple, brown, black.....then up to 10 degrees in black belt. I was taking karate several years ago and got up to my blue belt but had to quit for several reasons. My sensi said, when I started back, that I needed to start from the begining and work my way back up. I have know my sensi for over 20 years and know he is not in it for the money (classes are 25.00 per month and rank tests are only the cost of a new belt 10.00) Our classes are VERY tough and he works us out ALOT. Ive been back at it for almost 3 months and Ive been working very very hard. We had a rank test the other night and I know all my katas, forms, basics, techniques for all the way up to my green belt but I was testing for my yellow belt. During the test he asked me to perform katas and techniques at a higher level, but I thought he was just testing me to see how I would handle under pressure. Well it was him and 3 other black belts (Hes a 5th degree and there was a 4th degree and 2 second degrees) as judges and all 4 stated that my technique and katas and fighting were way well enough to allow me to go back to my original belt from when I left which is my blue. So he allowed me to skip my yellow and return to my blue. I have NO dought that he really beleives this because he has NEVER done this, but him and the other black belts said that I truely deserve it. I am so happy right now I cant explain. I know some of you may say that this wasnt right, but I think my skills are up to par with where im at. Sorry to be so long winded, Im just excited. Just wanted to share. Sohan Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Congratulations! I'm sure you deserved the promotion. It's very difficult sometimes to start back having seen others pass you, and even harder when you're told to start over. cathal Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 In many systems the belt colour doesn't much matter. So long as you are able to consistently perform at the level you are at then the colour is sometimes irrelevant. I have seen several people do a double grade, it is rare but it happens. And I am sure your instructor is very confident in your skill level and abilities, and has no doubt that you will not only excel, but prove to be a good example to other students at the school.By the way, I like the way you describe your school and instructor. It sounds like he truly enjoys showing people the way. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
