Sohan Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 Looks great!I would give my five cents but it would be coming from the perspective of another style, and I don't really think it's appropriate for a Shorin-ryu stylist to comment on a Shotokan stylist. But I was nonetheless impressed. Nice work, especially after the hike! With respect,Sohan "If I cannot become one of extraordinary accomplishment, I will not walk the earth." alsey Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 i'm not that familiar with sochin, but that looked pretty good!if i'm ever outdoors somewhere and there's no one around, i'll always do a kata or two. mountains are incredible for kata. "Gently return to the simple physical sensation of the breath. Then do it again, and again, and again. Somewhere in this process, you will come face-to-face with the sudden and shocking realization that you are completely crazy. Your mind is a shrieking, gibbering madhouse on wheels." - ven. henepola gunaratana
cathal Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 That isn't bad, I agree with the advice alrady given. Good quality video too. .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu
Daimyo Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 Great video and kata. Sochin is an beautiful kata and watching it on top the mountain was pretty cool. I'd love to shoot myself doing some kata's by the ocean .... great to keep and look back 25 years from now!
Brandon Fisher Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 Based solely on the technique of the kata here is my take having never done Sochin and only seen it a few times.First the technique was very controlled and shapr, yes I agree some of the kicks could have been sharper but after hiking, your footing and with yoru shoes on not bad overall. The kime was clearly there. Nice job.. Brandon FisherSeijitsu Shin Do
AngelaG Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 Not bad at all! Personally I like to see a more rooted fudo-dachi, and there where one or two times you sacrified technique for speed... but considering the fact that you had just had a long hike beforehand it's not surprising really. jaymac Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 I thought the form looked good. What a job to hike and then do kata. My only advice would be to make the strikes look a little more powerful. I think I will take my own advice and go practice too. A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.
The Karate Kid Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 i alwaqys describe sochin stance as a beginners front stance as it looks like a front stance with the back leg bent which is how i see alot of new comers do it "When I punch, I do not hit, it hits all by itself."Bruce Lee
AnonymousOne Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 here is a link to sochin, which I did on top of mount washburn in wyoming after the hike up there.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J3pJhOfpY4 It's not the best i've ever done by any means but constructive critisism is welcome. So, help me out?Sochin is one of the Kata's in our school for above dan grade level. You performed the movements correctly. However I would humbly suggest that you focus your technique more and develop power in your punches and kicks. Our school typically would hold lower stances than that and we use the side thrust kick rather than the snap. When you block, block as though you are trying to break the arm or leg of your oponent. So... power, speed, focus In out school these are the kata:Taikyoku Shodan - Sandan - white to orange beltHeian Shodan to Sandan - green beltHeian Yondan - Godan - Blue BeltTekki Shodan - Purple BeltHangetsu - Brown BeltBassai Dai - Black BeltThe rest are Dan grade Kata 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul.
