Fairfax_Uechi Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 what if they added brazilian jiu-jutsu to it ?Are you asking if the show would add a BJJ event, or a practictioner?IMHO, If the show added a BJJ event, then it would be pretty sorry. Since some (most??) of the folks on the show aren't that great anyway. If a BJJ individual was on the show, they'd also need some good stand up skills to be competitive in the show's format. But I'm sure they would have a great advantage then as most of hte BJJ folks that I've met who were black belts were pretty well rounded Martial artists.
legkicker Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I'd be a lot more impressed if they used Sabaki rules, or something similar to that. I'll be shocked if this show goes another season.

No being on the ground "It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenius."
Fairfax_Uechi Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 You're probably right. But one thing that I did see that I liked was that they did allow grabs. One of the "fighters" left a kick out and was grabbed by one of the traditional artists, and wasn't told that he couldn't do it. So that was pretty cool. And this isn't something that many TKD and similar style tournaments allow, if I'm not mistaken. And this is very different than how we train in Uechi, where if someone leaves a punch or kick out, we grab it and then use it to either throw you around, or take you down with it. Frankly, if I was sparring some of the folks on the show, many of them would have had trips to the ground due to hanging kicks out too long!
savedbygrace Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 Ive watched a lil of it....and I dont know about you guys, and I dont like to "pick" at people about things, but does Sanaz's (I think thats her name) "kia" or yell get on your nerves when shes fighting? It is just annoying and reminds me of fingernails going across a chalkboard. Shes a great fighter and Im sure could kick my tail, but her "kia" is just so annoying. Anyway, I know I'm wrong for saying that, please forgive, I didnt know if anyone else felt the same way. "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6
Sensei Rick Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 Ground fighting and bjj are great, but that's not what final fu is doing. Those arts are being handled by the ufc and others. If final fu did that, then they would be "copying", I'm sure they would be taken to task for that. The rules for final fu are set up to try and get you a good show. IE, a jump spinning kick is worth more than just a kick to the mid section= the producers are trying to get a more "flashy fight" They figure if the reward you for a moer complicated tech, then you will do it. And the reason for the light contact is so your fighters can do other events and the challenges that day. Plus it saves on your medical expenses and keep the contestants looking pretty. These kids on the show aren't trying to be ultimate fighters. It's more like combining karate with survivor or fear factor.I Don't know if the show is being run correctly, but I wish I had this Idea and put it to work. Only the ratings will tell if it is going to last. I encourage all of you that post in this forum to start a MA tv show that better exhibits "your" vision of the show. or maybe email them and give them GOOD ideas!I get what the producers are going for here. Will it be good for Martial arts? Of course it will. Kids that want to be the next final fu master will help pay the rent for a while until they realise it's hard work. The ones that realise that there is more to MA than being a "final fu" will stay in my classes and pay the rent for a lot longer. And guys.... Try not to be so hard a Ernie Raeys (sp) jr. ..... He has to eat too. place clever martial arts phrase here
elbows_and_knees Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 Coincidentally, since I first posted on this thread, five of my friends, all of them untrained, and one of them a bouncer alongside me, have all asked me if I knew about the show. They have all told me that they loved it. they never once referred to the "realism" of the fighting. They talk about the challenges and about the speed and technique seen in the fights. My bouncer co-worker already assumed that they are holding back their strikes so they don't hurt eachother. He actually respects them for that.If this is the general concensus of the audience at large, than this show could be pretty successful on several different levels.
jaymac Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 That is what I think elbowsandknees. The general non martial arts population really enjoys this show. It will boost interest in the local dojo's. A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.
Zaine Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 I think you blew this way out of preportion. These people are competition fighters, and the rules actually state that you can't fight so hardcore as you might be used to. To say that your insulted though...get over it, is it your style or you that is looking bad, its you thats the fighter. They don't represent us they represent themselves. Martial arts training is 30% classroom training, 70% solo training.https://www.instagram.com/nordic_karate/
Zaine Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Oh and Ernie Reyes Jr. is actually a really good fighter, he used to be a kick boxer. Martial arts training is 30% classroom training, 70% solo training.https://www.instagram.com/nordic_karate/
