That was a cool article. I wish there was a school in my area that taught bareknuckle boxing. It is interesting stuff and it shows that the West did have martial arts, and effective ones at that. Like it was mentioned before, the WMA are often underrated.

Interesting article. But I would think that some of the changes in boxing techs are not only because of changes in rules, but more due to a natural evolution of technique through experience.

I agree that some boxing defences rely alot on the size of the gloves to give you cover. When I compete in Kudo bareknuckle MMA, I find it alot harder to protect myself against punches than when I fight kickboxing rules.

What you say is an important and very true fact. When going barenuckle the importance of distance and zabaki (evasion) becomes very apparent, becasue you dont have the gloves to help you protect agians incoming punches.

I'd imagine that bareknuckle boxes would have been quite formidible indeed with their full contact fights and grappling experience
