Ya so I'm shopping around for karate schools, can you guys check out some of their websites and tell me what you think, dont want a McDojo.

http://www.dragonbushidodojo.com/ - My top pick since they teach Shorei-Ryu Karate, Krav Maga, Muay Thai and BJJ.

http://www.idahoselfdefense.com/default.html - My second pick, I'm not a huge fan of the "Americanized" karate versions

http://www.boisekenpo.com

Any thoughts?

The dragon bushido thing seems really amazing.. I wish I had an opportunity to learn Krav Maga and Karate at the same dojo.. From their site, they offer a free trial class.. Take the trial class and see if you like the class or not.. If you like it then ask for the payment.

You should ask questions like, will there be belt fees? Is there any long term contracts? etc..

Ill look at the other sites and edit my reply..

Idaho seems like a good place too, not rreally my styles.. But there is no contracts which is a good sign that says it isnt all about money.. There is also a free trial class for that soo go and take a look, ask the same questions such as grading costs etc etc..

There wasnt much info or an FAQ on the Boise Kenpo.. Oh well just go and have a trial class for the school you really wanna go to then if it looks like a McDojo then try the next dojo.. Good luck and I hope this helps

Drafon Bushido looks the best, but you can only make a decision by visiting the dojos. You need to meet the people and get the feel of the place in order to make a decision.

Any dojo that offers XMA I sould stay away from, but each to their own I guess.

If you are after Traditional Karate, then I wouldn't choose any of them.

Just based off of the websites, I'd look at the idaho self defense center as my first choice. I'd boycott dragon bushido dojo just based off of their website design(but then again, I'm a web designer :D )

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Thanks for your input everyone, and especially thanks to PAI, I've looked for a Shotokan school forever, this one seems legit, and its less than 1 block from my house! I just never caught it before, its not in the yellow pages or anything.

keep us posted after you meet them.

OK I've emailed the sensei and he's really friendly and informative.

The cost is just $15 a month along with annual dues to SKA. The gi is just 20 bucks.

They also do sparring "We do sparr. Four different methods. one

step, three step, free one attack and of course, free sparring. very

sensitive to respect and control to prevent stupid injuries that

prevent continous practice."

Also since its a member of SKA there are "special trainings" that I will have the opportunity of going too if I join the school

He's invited me to come to a few classes at no cost, I hope to do so either this tuesday or the next as I have to work

Good luck with that!

IMHO, of those original three, the fourth one is the best. :D XMA is a no-no in my book, the Kempo one looked so-so, and the AK one seemed a bit too young (in terms of instructors' rank) for you to get a decent education.
