hi,

which styles of kung-fu could generally be regarded as being more tournament/ sparring orientated?

i have read in another forum that lau gar is particularly geered towards mixed art/ contact tournament? the guys discussing it were mainly saying they were disapointed by the stlye because it was too "external". but that criticism has made me think it could be what i'm looking for.

thanks very much for any advice,

Tim

1 - it depends on whether the teacher adapts his martial art towards competition rules....

2 - theres no such thing as being 'too external or internal' and there is no waty you can critisise a style on that basis

3 - if you have found a local club that does lau gar then give it a go, and see what you think....

If you have just read the above message and agree with it then you may worship me as the best thing since sliced bread.

Of course if you don't agree then hey, i'm a crazed lunatic and you should ignore my insane ramblings.

Lau gar has two sides in its tradional training there is a external side (hard) and a internal side (soft) You will only develop the internal side the longer you train. As there is internal ways in the forms as you become more proffecient.

In regards the tourmanet fight Lau gar has bulit its reputation in the fighting circuit. some say to the detrement to the style. It wll depend on your instructor what bias he will give i learn the tradiional side although i did have an instructor was compition led. we cover it all. But if you find a good instrutor he will cover both bases. But there was alot of conditioning ie press ups on wrist fingers and fists etc hope that helps

IMO, the external will serve you better in terms of competition and in street fights, should they happen. Time to reach proficiency in internal styles always seems to be longer. Another style you may want to look into is choy lay fut.
