I opened up a branch of my dojo at my school and I just barely had enough students for the school to allow it. I need more students... two of them are leaving the school, one of the dropped out, so I need a way of getting more people to join.

Here's what I will be doing:

Promotional Video and flyers

What else should I do to get the word out and get more students for next year? Any advice on what the promotional video should focus on and what the flyers should say?

We went to a school once during lunch hour, and during their regular gym periods. We had a demo...then we were flooded with kids.

How about you do an offerl say like: get the first two months lesson for half the price!? Or; do an open evening, where anyone can come along and get a free lesson and see a demo on what Shoto is about...?

I don't charge them. They just have to buy their own equipment (and the school reimburses them).

Wow... Wish my school done that! But they didn't, so I'm not gonna complain about it... :D

Well it's actually a school club, but we're a branch of my dojo. The school reimburses clubs when they buy equipment and stuff like that.

I'm going to ask the school to reimburse the members because I don't want the cost (came to $60 for insurance, a gi, gloves last year) to scare away potential students.

Fliers are good,

Offering a free trial class works well,

Demos also help to bring new students,

Once a year we run a "Bring a friend week" where all the students must bring someone to come and try a class. Most of them stay afterwards and carry on training.

my biggest tip... get some business cards/fliers and get out there and just talk to people. I also travel around to elementary/middle/high schools and do free demos. Even if no one signs up... your getting your name out there.

Get your current students to bring in a friend, and if they sign up for so long, say 6 months or better, offer the one who brought them in a break on fees for 6 months, or something like that. Or, you could offer special introductory rates, with a uniform for free, and things like this. In the martial arts, one of the best forms of advertising is word of mouth. So, get out there and be seen!
