Thinking ahead

Recommended Posts

Thinking about college I remember hearing that my friend has earned an apprenticeship with an electricians company. This makes me think, are there such things as apprenticeships in martial arts? What would it take to get one, and where would they be? Is this just to great sounding to be true?

Just a thought

Well I don't think you will gain college credit for it. However when I went to college I worked out a deal with the local YMCA and the current karate teacher. I took his class and I also taught beginner classes for him. Because he was able to offer 2 or 3 more classes a week now I basically got free lessons and worked as a co-sensei in the main classes. The lady who ran the YMCA also gave me free membership for doing womens self defense classes. So although the school may not give you credit you can make things eaiser for you.

BTW working with another older more experanced black belt as a equal taught me so mcuh moore so I guess you could say I was his understudy or apprentice of sorts

In some Japanese martial arts there is what's called an "Uchi Deshi." An uchi deshi is pretty much a live in student. Besides living at the dojo they are responsible for the care and maintenence of the dojo while devoting themselves to the training of the sensei's art. I have seen this with some of the Aikido schools.

I hope this may have answered your question.

Take care
