The best kick for self defense

Recommended Posts

If it's self defense, groin kick, or to the knee.

The problem that I have with kicking the knee is that, although it is a good target, is the possibility of a lawsuit being thrown your way.

Personally, if it's a self defense situation I'm concerned with stopping the bad guy's aggression. I'm going to do whatever it takes to make him stop fighting me. If that means I have to break his leg so be it. I'll deal with the courts later.

High kicks need to be used with very strict attention to opportunity. I fought this kid my sophomore year in high school in the locker room after he pulled my stuff out of my locker and decided to get in MY face for it. He threw a wide left hook so I paaked it to my left and nailed him in the side of the head with a right side kick... came reaaaal close to giving him a concussion. If the opportunity is there and you think you can pull it off.. use at your own risk.

My personal favorite for a self defense kick are the front and side kicks from Wing Tsun. Low, hard to telegraph, very powerful, and straight to the point. I'm also an avid fan of the good ol' TSD Ap Chagi "HUP!"

I understand what you are saying. You make a very good point, and it is one I would normally agree with. If you get attacked, then taking out the knee is a good way to stop it.

Yeah, I agree with MizuRyu. I think the sidekick is probably the most powerful kick you can execute, it's kind of like kicking like a donkey or a mule.

I think the side kick is very powerful, and a very good kick. The only thing I see is that you most likely will have to turn your body sideways to perform it, causing a little telegraph. That is why I like the round kick; there is a little less telegraph, in my opinion.

with a sidekick, you need area to do it (unless you not going to perfrom the sport style kick) but you'll still need room to turn your back leg...

Round kick is simple and effective in small spaces and even if yoo don't turn your back foot, it can still hurt...

Exactly. That is the arguement I have been making for this particular kick, and that is why I prefer it.
