bigpopparob2000 Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 What stance is best for practicing aero kicks. I'm trying to learn them on my own, and I can't tell if I'm just too new at them or if I'm using a bad stance. At my school, we mostly practice with a side-fighting stance. Is this stance good for learning aero kicks or should I practice them with a forward stance?
bushido_man96 Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 I wouldn't worry about a specific stance. Take an athletic position with your knees bent, legs not too far apart, and get a good burst into your jump.Do plyometrics twice a week, and build your leg strength. Also, make sure you have mastered the kick on the ground before you go flying through the air to do it. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
Aodhan Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 There is a TON of technique to learning aero kicks. I would suggest getting some of the DVD's from Century (Rock solid kicks), or finding someone around in your area that knows how to do them and learn from them. One suggestion - Find a local gymnastics club that has open hours. You can practice on the tramps and the spring floor until you get the technique down, then move it to a regular floor.Aodhan There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.-Douglas Everett, American hockey player
aefibird Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 I'm trying to learn them on my own, I'd say that you need to find a club that will teach them to you or at the very least get a DVD or book to help you. Also, having a friend watch you train might help - he/she can give you tips and tell you if your kicks 'look' right; even a non martial artist can often tell if a kick 'looks' right. Keep practicing your kicks without jumps to get them even better, plus make sure you strengthen the muscles in your legs with jogging, cycling etc or with squats. "Was it really worth it? aigaios Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 My school has jumping kicks built into our system. The stance we use is a basic ready stance. Think of it like a basic sparring stance. Cho Dan Hapkidoist and trickster.
Aodhan Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 aero kicks?I'm assuming he's talking about the more advanced kicks such as the 540, 720, side semi, etc. Most of the "traditional" aero kicks such as the butterfly are taught in the regular classes for advanced colored belts.Aodhan There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.-Douglas Everett, American hockey player

aigaios Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 Ahh... If he's talking about tricking, I do that too. A good site to visit is TricksTutorials.com. I personally can only land 540, 720, btwist, 3splitkick, and bicycle... Cho Dan Hapkidoist and trickster.
