freebird534 Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 does any one know the real way to open a butterfly knife??? i cant figure it out. please help me! believe you can do anything and you are limitless
glockmeister Posted May 27, 2006 Posted May 27, 2006 It's much easier to show than to try and explain on a forum. Personally, I think they are a waste, too many moving parts if you ever need it in a high stress situation. "You know the best thing about pain? Personally, I think they are a waste, too many moving parts if you ever need it in a high stress situation. That's how I feel. I think butterfly knives are WAY over-rated. With the wonderful selection of top-notch one-hand opening tactical folders out there, why would you want anything else? If it works, use it!If not, throw it out!
glockmeister Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 Yeah., But they look oh so cool in the movies.... "You know the best thing about pain? It let's you know you're not dead yet!"http://geshmacheyid.forumotion.com/f14-self-defense
UseoForce Posted May 28, 2006 Posted May 28, 2006 I love when Jack Bauer on 24 whips out his steel... If it works, use it!If not, throw it out!
granmasterchen Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 i think the main use of the balisong, butterfly knife, today would be as an intimidation factor in a street situation, if you happen to be carrying one and are approached by some average thugs and you whip it out and start doing some cool moves, they may just move along.....as for opening, do you own a double edged or single edged?..........well i was going to attempt how to explain it....but i now have to agree with glockmeister...it's very difficult to try and explain by writing, much much easier to explain by showing it in person. That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
granmasterchen Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 ok....im going to try.....hold the knife closed and locked, you pull it out of your pocket and hold it upside down in your hand, you now use your thumb to open the lock, now spin it in your hand keeping it closed with the locking mechanism now located at the bottom of your hand. Hold with the the blade side up (still closed), flip the top half open in your palm and let that half along with the blade fall back against the top of your hand (handle hits first then the blade falls into it) while still holding the bottom half. Now you will be making a circular motion in front of your body to spin/rotate the knife in your hand so now when you allow the top half along with the blade to fall back against the top of your hand the second time the blade will hit first but it will be the blunt side so it wont cut you and then the other half will fall on top of the blade. Now make a small flipping action so that the handle half lying on the top of your hand falls back into the palm of your hand with the other half of the handle. The knife should now be locked with blade out and both handle halves back in the palm and you can now lock it into this position if you want to keep it like that or leave it unlocked in order to do more spinning techniques in order to intimidate or distract your opponents.......hope that helps.....very hard to explain....wish i was there to show you.....i dont even have my knife to play with, simply going off of old training movements in my mind, lol.....hope it's ok. That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
glockmeister Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 i think the main use of the balisong, butterfly knife, today would be as an intimidation factor in a street situation, if you happen to be carrying one and are approached by some average thugs and you whip it out and start doing some cool moves, they may just move along.....I think it's more the other way around. Most bad guys would like to use something like a balisong, or switchblade to intimidate a bystander or potential victim by flashing around the knife, and using "cool" moves. If it's a "good guy" who is carrying one for defense, chances are that if he is in a situation where he or she really needs a potentially deadly weapon, they would hardly have time to use any flashy, cool moves and deploy such a weapon, if they did, they also more thna likely had the time and space to run, and therefore, only bringing upon themselves potentially legal disasters. Which brings me to another point. In a lot of jurisdictions, balisongs, switchblades and all that other Hollywood street gand stuff is illigal. (Hard ti understand why, since neither of these weapons could possible cause more damage than a good tactical folder.) And why would you want to risk getting arrested for carrying a weapon that for all intents and purposes is ineffective to begin with? "You know the best thing about pain? TigerDude Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 Butterfly knives - the XMA version of a cutting device. If you think only of hitting, springing, striking or touching the enemy, you will not be able actually to cut him. You must thoroughly research this. - Musashi
cathal Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 I've located several videos demonstrating this both slowly and quickly.
