I normally train in Enshin Karate, however for two months I'm going to have some extra time so I plan on training in a local BJJ school (2 or 3 times a week) and a community activity center Judo class (one time a week). I understand that my Karategi probably won't be able to stand-up to the stress that grappling would put on it.

Thus, I want to buy a plain, white, grappling gi to use in both classes (Judo and BJJ) and was looking at the Mizuno line of uniforms since they appear to have a good reputation. Does anyone have any advice on what type of material, weight, or weave would work best for a uniform to use in both types of training?

I have an Atama, love it.

BTW, aren't mizuno gi's 200-400 bucks?

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

Another vote for Atama here. I have one in Blue. Mine is Gold weave. I suggest a double weave for most gi's or a gold weave in atama. I am not overly familiar with all the different brands.

I don't think they make double any more because of low demand. I think they only make single weave and Gold. Gold is supposedly very strong but light. However, my single weave has never failed me, plus it's light. I can't really justify spending more when I am so satisfied with my single weave.

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

I'm gonna concur on Atama's gold weave not being much different than their single, I have a gold and most people in my class have the normal, and the only noticable difference is that under the atama logo on the left shoulder I have a brazilian flag, pretty much what you get for the extra money. And it's held up very well, but I don't have a single weave to compare it to.

Edit: I'll try to grab a single weave and weigh the difference if anyone is interested.

I also wear Atama!! It's extremely strong. I wear a single weave that hasn't ripped yet (3 yrs of regular practice). It's also less costly than Mizuno.

My school uses the basic white Hayashi Brand. I bought my son a blue one for Christmas too...very nice, takes tons of abuse and cost about $50. The white ones start at about $40, and you can also get it in unbleached. The tops are very nice, the pants fairly basic drawstring with minimalist knee pads.

We dressed ours up with some patches from our parent school (Charles Gracy) the look really good.

Mizuno's are good from my experience, just a little pricey. There's a lot of other places out there offering great quality without the price. Take your time and shop around. Definitely go with a double weave for the top and the reinforced knees for the pants. It'll last you the longest. I had a single weave tear on me one time, but I had trained with it for several years. My double weave I've had for about 10 years with no problems at all.
