tkdwolf
Why is the current trend that TaeKwonDo black belts above 1st Dan have Gold stripes on their belts? I am a 2nd dan and will not have any stripes put on my belt. I am wearing the same black belt that I received when I became 1st Dan. I thought that once receiving a black belt, one should be at a state of mind where you do not need to show off your rank on your belt. I would prefer someone watch my ability and then decide what dan that I am. I also do not care if anyone knows whether I am a 2nd, 4th or higher dan. I have talked with many Korean Taekwondo stylists and they do not use stripes on their black belts (WTF). I also do not need the ego stroke of people seeing my belt with multiple stripes. Are not black belts supposed to be beyond needing such a stroke? tkdwolfWTF 2nd DanUSKMAF 1st Dan (Hapkido)

Taesujutsudrw
I don't wear stripes..I wear the ranking belts. From fourth up..there are also ranking belts instead of stripes. This belt I wear at testings. In class and competition..I wear a plain black belt. Peace, tae Kyoshi Deborah R. thaiboxerken
I tend to be very sceptical of anyone that claims to have anything more than 3rd Dan. I've seen too many posers out there that just think they are soo cool because they are 5th dan and such and turn out to be total goons. So for me, the higher the rank.. the less serious I take them. Maybe it's just because I live in the USA where anyone can call themselves a black-belt. iamrushman
i agree that skill prevails...i don't wear belt stripes unless it is a formal function. sort of like the class A's we had to wear in the military. like testing/turney judge or demos. just any belt will do for me, so my pants don't fall down. _________________ rushman (taekwondo moderator) 3rd dan wtf/kukkiwon florida This Message was edited by: iamrushman on Jul 25, 2001 10:46am rushman (karate forums sensei)3rd dan wtf/kukkiwon"saying nothing...sometimes says the most"--e. dickerson
Kickbutt
All of the blackbelts in our school wear stripes - they're actually sewed on once you get your blackbelt. I don't believe it's an ego thing - none of them have egos, they're actually all very humble - but just proud of the fact that they have worked their a$$es off to get to that point. A very high percentage of people quit after earning their blackbelt. What's wrong with having stripes??? Doesn't necessarily mean you have an ego....and it's something you should be proud to show, nothing wrong with that! If you think something small cannot make a difference - try going to sleep with a mosquito in the room.-Unknown-
iamrushman
no; there is nothing wrong with wearing your stripes. yes; it is something to be very proud of and shows that you have put in the time and sweat it takes to get them. it's just a personal choice for me because i'm with a school that did not give them to me. so therefore, out of respect i just wear a plain BB. rushman (karate forums sensei)3rd dan wtf/kukkiwon"saying nothing...sometimes says the most"--e. dickerson
taezee
I agree with wearing the stripes at formal events such as testing, demonstrations, e.t.c...and i have respect for those individuals that i know deserve to wear them but if Im just meeting you I just take the belt at face value and let your actions and the way you carry yourself determine if you have the "right stuff" Javier l Rosario instructor taekwondo/hapkidounder master Atef s Himaya"whenever youre lazy enough not to train .someone, somewhere is training very hard to kick your *"
Angus
I don't like belts - i hate them - but the black belt certificate looks good on a resume. Angus Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.
iamrushman
i agree; but putting it on a resume is one thing but backing up is another. _________________ rushman (taekwondo moderator) 3rd dan wtf/kukkiwon florida This Message was edited by: iamrushman on Jul 26, 2001 10:41pm rushman (karate forums sensei)3rd dan wtf/kukkiwon"saying nothing...sometimes says the most"--e. dickerson
