We have a sensei that has just started to do Jiu-jutsu and always trys the chokes and holds on me.

It does depend on which choke they have got you in and it is all about knowing what to do for each choke.

Front choke is the easiest to break, a swift knee/kick to the groin, thrusting the palm of your hand upwards towards the nose (I know I could kill them but if someones choking me I know who I want to be standing at the end).

Rear choke, depends on your size, im a big guy so i would just roll over or fall back with them still attached.

I'm not saying that if someone walked up behind me in the street i wouldn't panic because I would, however its nice to know how to get out of them.

Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.

lol, fall back when an RNC is on? That is exactly what I'd want you to do if I was the one doing the choking.

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

RNC?????

If your holding on to my back and I fall on you with an elbow in the ribs might hurt a bit.

RNC => Rear Naked Choke

As for the throwing an opponent who has applied a RNC that is "sunk" - sometimes the throw might get you out of the choke, sometimes not. I had a RNC applied to a partner who was at least a good 50 pounds heaver than me while he was on his knees. He did a shoulder throw on me and I kept the choke on and did a shoulder roll. This led to a position where I still had the RNC applied and allowed me to easily to get my hooks in too. He tapped just a few seconds later.

As previous posters have said, once the choke is sunk your chances of escaping are pretty small - mostly you have to hope that they have left themselves open for a strike or there is a chance of using a pressure point to help. Neither of those two is a given for the exact situation you are in.

Falling back actually puts you in a better position for the guy choking you because he can get his hooks in and doesn't have to worry about being tossed over the front. I don't really understand how you are going to get an elbow into his ribs if he has you in an RNC, and even if you could, I don't see it breaking someone's grip if he is reasonably tough.

That said, you should do whatever you can to NOT fall back if someone puts a standing RNC on you. Your best bet is to try to flip him forward overtop of you.

Would the force of trying to bring a body overtop of you cause some blood vessels to burst, say, in your face or eyes?

I don't think so. I've been flipped while trying to put a standing RNC on someone. He was fine and he managed to break my grip.

That said, I wouldn't put someone in a standing RNC in the future without breaking his balance first.

it might be hard, but i suggest turning into him, that saves me a bunch of times. needless to say that would be much harder in a fight.

Im brasilian, but live in the united states. Really enjoying martial arts.

Of course there are counters, but it depends on how far behind you're lagging with your own counter. For example, if someone attempts to set up a RNC, you have time to defend- if hes already sunk the choke in, you're dead.
