Ok I am going to start to teach my self bjj from tapes and I can't get to any schools right now although I have wrestled for 8 years and took muay thai and kenpo and boxing for a year so I know how to train. I was wondering your opinions on video tape training? Evan Tanner the world champion for his weight class (not anymore though) trained himself by tapes...... Looks like it worked for him.

IMHO tapes along will not be effective. Good luck :)

Although it might be possible to learn a standup/striking art from tapes, I don't think that there is any realistic expectation of learning a grappling art from video material. There is so much involved with weight shifts, counters, movement, etc. that requires feedback from a partner and instructor that the video just can't convey.

You said you wrestled for 8 years, so obviously you got to a fairly proficient level. Look back at it, do you think you could have gotten to that same level simply by watching video?

Tapes IMO can only cover the basics like body positioning, no matter how many times you watch how a move is executed it'll never be as beneficial as having someone there to practise the move on and correct you when you make a mistake.

Unfortunately a tape cannot tell you to raise or lower your punch it or your block that moves slightly to far.

Agreed. A tape can teach you the basics of something, but an instructor and partner are required for pulling off a lot of things correctly.

After the first week, you will learn more in two hours with an instructor than you will in two years studying alone.
