rabid hamster Posted April 20, 2002 Posted April 20, 2002 Hiya everyone, well I started TKD a while ago(Thanks to you people's encouragment) , and I absolutely love it. But during summer vacation when I won't have much to do, I also wanna cross train in aikido, mainly cuz TKD doesn't have any grappling and weapons, and there's an aikido place nearby. I dun even know if Mom will say I can go since it might be a bit of money, but hopefully she will, cuz she's always saying how I need more and more exercise... lol But anywho, here's the site to the place i'm thinking about going to. http://12.22.32.210/ Can you guys and girls please tell me if that place looks like a good place to go? Thank you much! Cya Hiya [ This Message was edited by: Hiya on 2002-04-19 22:26 ] It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, for the most essential things are invisible to the eye.
Jack Posted April 20, 2002 Posted April 20, 2002 To my eye that looks like a very good place to train in Aikido. JackCurrently 'off' from formal MA trainingKarateForums.com
TKD_McGee Posted April 21, 2002 Posted April 21, 2002 Wierd... most TKD places have Hapikido along with them... I would suggest Hapikido or Judo over Aikido. Aikido is very spiritual, and has much philosophy... I don't think its a good choice for grappling compared to the arts I listed above. Do unto others, as they done to you.
Bon Posted April 21, 2002 Posted April 21, 2002 akido takes a long time to learn, hope you have a lot of patience. It takes sacrifice to be the best. There are always two choices, two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy.
rabid hamster Posted April 21, 2002 Author Posted April 21, 2002 I think I do have the patience. But the reason why I wanted aikido was because I read you don't have to be all big and stuff to beat your opponent(Plus you use weapons). I don't know if it's like that with hapkido, because I was also considering taking hapkido since it looked like a good art. so hapkido or aikido? I dunno.. what do you guys and girls think is the better choice? It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, for the most essential things are invisible to the eye.
Pacificshore Posted April 21, 2002 Posted April 21, 2002 Try Aikido this summer and then if there's a Hapkido school nearby try that the following fall and then make a comparison to see which you prefer the most. Di'DaDeeeee!!!Mind of Mencia
rabid hamster Posted April 21, 2002 Author Posted April 21, 2002 I would want to do as what you said Pacificshore but.. ~changes into my Mom~ "no no, you either start one art, stick with it, or don't start at all" lol yep that's my Mom for you guys. well anywho. I thought if I decided to start another art, instead of just thinking about hapkido and aikido, I might as well look through other arts and see which one seems to be the best. How about wing chun? That sounds good too for me. http://www.professionalmartialarts.com Can anyone tell me if this place would be alright too(It teaches two hours of wing chun on Sundays, and on Sudays I have a lot of time)? It would be a lot easier if there were less martial arts to choose from. Sorry for all these questions Thank you Cya Hiya It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, for the most essential things are invisible to the eye.
Jack Posted April 21, 2002 Posted April 21, 2002 Slider, your mum could be worse. I wanted to start a different art and stop TKD, and my dad called me a quitter, said I'd have wasted the last year, and said if I want to study a different art I'm paying for it. And he knows I can't afford lessons. That Association doesn't look so good, "Call or stop by today now for a free trial!" "new state-of-the-art martial arts fitness programs." It looks like it could be good for fun or stress relief, but it generally looks a bit weak for my likings. If I were you, I would probably stick with the TKD. But I'm not you, so. YODA Posted April 21, 2002 Posted April 21, 2002 If Aikido is your choice then this looks like a great place to learn it. Aikido is a great art with many benefits for it's practitioners. I don't believe realistic self protection to be one of those benefits. I thought their weapons kata page was very well put together - "bookmarked!" A few things to consider though... - Aikido is not the sort of art you can just take for the summer. It takes years of continuous study to even begin to make it applicable. A student of mine is a Sandan with 20 years Aikido and HE finds it hard to make some of the stuff work. - Aikido is not what I would call "Grappling" but more a study in range, redirection and energy flow. If you want to learn to fight with grappling then consider something that fights both standing & on the ground and that contests it's techniques - you absolutely MUST spar otherwise you are doing little more than learning something "about fighting" rather than learning "fighting". Bon Posted April 21, 2002 Posted April 21, 2002 Yeap, I had akido at my last dojo where I did kickboxing.. I found the akido to be useless because it's so hard to apply and I don't consider it a grappling art.. All it did was make me realise how poor my grappling was and to find a REAL grappling art. I took a couple of lessons in Judo, but the emphasis is more on throws while you're on your feet, rather than fighting on the ground, which was what I was after.. I'm doing BJJ now and I love it.. when I get my jiu jitsu skills up, I'm gonna go in a MMA comp, no holds barred! It takes sacrifice to be the best. There are always two choices, two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy.
