aefibird Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 I can't see as it makes any difference. Just because a person is homosexual doesn't mean that they think about sex all the time, or try it on with every person they meet. People at a dojo/dojang are there to train, it shouldn't matter what race or sex a person is, just in the same way as it shouldn't matter about a person's age, choice or religion or sexual preference. marie curie Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 We have, and I have never considered it an issue, though I did have an uncomfortable situation in a grappling class with an overly aggressive partner who was homosexual. I spoke with the instructor and we dealt with it--although I really wanted to kick the guy's butt at the time. Respectfully,SohanThis doesn't seem like any different a situation than an "uncomfortable situation in a grappling class" with a girl (or for me- with a guy). People are just that-people- and no matter their personal lives some are going to see grappling as a sexual opportunity instead of the training that we all go for. IcemanSK Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 I don't see why it would be an issue.....even in a grappling class. If someone does something sexually inappropriate during class (& I mean: female, male, student or instructor) it needs to be dealt with. But sexual orientation has nothing to do with a persons MA abillities. Being a good fighter is One thing. Being a good person is Everything. Kevin "Superkick" McClinton
bushido_man96 Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Have you ever had a homosexual person at your dojo? If so, how did people in your dojo react? Particularly those with Japanese senseis, was it a problem? Does it make others uncomfortable? In our dojo, our teachers do so well with so many people, regardless of age, sex, or level of ability. Even so, I don't know of any openly homosexual people in martial arts.Interesting question...never considered it before. I would hope that if they did, they would just not tell me. "Don't ask, don't tell." Really, though, it should not matter, as long as people mind their own business. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com

An inappropriate unwanted sexual contact in a training class is not something to take lightly regardless of the sexual orientation--we didn't put up with it, and the fellow ended up finding another place to train where they are more tolerant of that behavior. With respect,Sohan "If I cannot become one of extraordinary accomplishment, I will not walk the earth." Brandon Fisher Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 I had a student once who was and very open about it. Very nice guy and a very good karateka but unfortunetly the drug habit he was trying to overcome when he moved to Ohio got the best of him again once he had been here for awhile. bushido_man96 Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 I don't care but i can't focus if i know my grappling partner is homosexual, i don't even feel comfortable grappling with female partner for other reasons, i never have problem in karate class but in grappling you may injure your partner in a second.I didn't think about the grappling aspect in my original post. It changes things a bit.....I don't how comfortable I would feel. I would like to think I could deal with it, but I don't know, honestly. With TKD its different. There is no grappling. I guess you don't spend as much time in their "personal space" as grapplers do. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
bruceflea Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 I think this is a pointless observation. So if what if someone is homosexual or straight? I dont go around asking people there sexual preferences because it is irrelivant to my training! Its 2006 not 1906. Be like water my friend!!
shotokanbeginner Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I was always afraid once my sensei or fellow students or even oshima himself found out I would be like banned or hated, most of you make it seem as though I have nothing to worry about everyone has fear, but it is when we let it overcome us that we losesoft, hard, slow, fast components of kata
Brandon Fisher Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Not in my mind why should you have something to worry about. Brandon FisherSeijitsu Shin Do
