solar_kid Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Have you ever had a homosexual person at your dojo? If so, how did people in your dojo react? Particularly those with Japanese senseis, was it a problem? Does it make others uncomfortable? In our dojo, our teachers do so well with so many people, regardless of age, sex, or level of ability. Even so, I don't know of any openly homosexual people in martial arts. ----Hmm. Hello. This is the floor. How did I get here?
Dont call me Sir Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 I don't know of any 'outwardly homosexuals' in my Academy, but then I really don't care. We're there to train, not get hung-up on peoples personal lives. Everyone is different, everyone else should respect that and be tolerable of those around them. From a personal point of view, I'm comfortable with who I am, so I'm comfortable around others that want to be what they want to be. Each to their own.It really shouldn't be an issue, in the dojo/dojang or anywhere else for that matter.DCMS. "There's nothing wrong with my defence, you attacked me wrong!"
marie curie Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Yeh, actually one of the high-schoolers that earned his shodan in my old system was a homosexual, but I don't think that anyone knew- or if they did, no on cared. shotokanbeginner Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 I'm a bisexual myself actually, and no one in my shotokan classes know becuase where we train is not to dicuss sexual prefrences, but to train. I don't imagine anyone would care all that much, and if they did they probably wouldn't show it. everyone has fear, but it is when we let it overcome us that we losesoft, hard, slow, fast components of kata
Sohan Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 We have, and I have never considered it an issue, though I did have an uncomfortable situation in a grappling class with an overly aggressive partner who was homosexual. I spoke with the instructor and we dealt with it--although I really wanted to kick the guy's butt at the time. Aodhan Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Who cares if they are or not? Unless they are going around grabbing butts or something like that, they are just like any other student.I have had homosexual friends (One was a fraternity brother), and 99% of them are just like every other person out there. There are very few "effeminite" or "hysterical" homosexuals such as the stereotypes on TV portray.Aodhan There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.-Douglas Everett, American hockey player

There are very few "effeminite" or "hysterical" homosexuals such as the stereotypes on TV portray.AodhanI've never been threatened by "effeminate" types. My concern is with the 6' 2" 240 lb guys who will use force to get what they want. Sexual abuse happens to men as well as women--just look at what goes on in prisons across this country. I've run across enough of this type in my life to know that they are the real threat--especially the ones who are still in the closet. However, homosexuals are much like any other cross section of people. There are pillars of society and there are sexual abusers, there are churchgoers and there are promiscuous lowlifes. We can't categorize them into any neat little label.Respectfully,Sohan "If I cannot become one of extraordinary accomplishment, I will not walk the earth." P.A.L Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 I don't care but i can't focus if i know my grappling partner is homosexual, i don't even feel comfortable grappling with female partner for other reasons, i never have problem in karate class but in grappling you may injure your partner in a second.
lordtariel Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 I really don't see a problem with it. What they do with their private life is their buisness. I'm here to train. There's no place like 127.0.0.1
cathal Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Not in my dojo, but there is one nearby that has a Nidan who is "out". Their system didn't seem to mind at all. .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu
