ShinningPhoenix Posted April 25, 2006 Posted April 25, 2006 Hey I'm thinking about taking some Shaolin Kung-Fu lessons at a nearby dojo. And so I have a couple of questions for anyone that knows Shaolin Kung-Fu:1. What types of moves does Shaolin Kung-Fu mostly practise? (Ex, kicks)2. Can you give me a description of all of the Animal styles included with Shaolin?3. If there is anyone that knows the scorpion style (I've heard it's a form of Shaolin Kung-Fu) Could you please give me details on this style? (Like types of kicks)? Thanks in advance for any help =D

(Like types of kicks)?Southern Shaolin primarily uses in close hand/fist strikes while Northern Shaolin uses kicks & longarm techniques.Southern Shaolin has five animals: Dragon, Snake, Tiger, Leopard & Crane. Not sure about Northern Shaolin.Never heard of scorpion style.
lilkarate75 Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 First of all u practice doin' front kicks, inside, and outside cresent kicks without bending your legs. u do that in a group in 2 lines one by one. then u start learning step by step moves in your first form. its called the 5 motion. don't rush if u think that u can advace that quickly. focus on the correct angle and position of ur block, kick, or punch. it'll take a lot of flexibility and/or effort. they push u a lot and u gotta b fast. ur time reaction has 2 b fast. practice kicking at ur forehead. don't kick above. keep ur back straight. it may take u awhile 2 advance 2 the next belt level which is yellow. First courage, second power, and then technique.
elbows_and_knees Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 plain and simple, you will learn a lot about a lot of things. "shaolin" these days is mainly just northern longfist, which is a conglomeration of northern styles and techniques. you will learn the 10 core shaolin forms and a ton of other forms from other longfist styles. It's a very generic style in that you learn a little about a lot of stuff. Many people use longfist as a springboard into other, more specific styles.Northern shaolin utilizes the same 5 animals KFdude mentioned for southern. Most longfist today also has a lot of sport wushu added into it.
elbows_and_knees Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 it may take u awhile 2 advance 2 the next belt level which is yellow.if the school uses sashes, their systems will vary. I have seen schools where the second sash is orange. I have also seen schools that didn't even have an orange sash.
dook sau Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 one thing u can never hope to achieve is mastering kung fu because its so big,but i beleive northern styles include praying mantis aswell but a different approach than southern.not that im an expert or anything.(in my kung fu class it goes white, green, yelow, red, blue, black but in the adults class which i go to they dont include green so im yellow) its like a finger pointing away to the moon.....dont concentrate on the finger or youu will miss all that heavenly glory
elbows_and_knees Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 there are both northern and southern mantis styles, but they aren't necessarily a part of shaolin kung fu. northern mantis is it's own style. I do know of some schools that teach basic mantis forms though, such as bung bo and bot bo.
getawaytkd Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 are there any belts in kung fu and if there are what color is the first? i have been told it is red? is that right
WudangDragon Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 We have sashes in LJK Hun Gar Kung Fu (worn like a belt, but about 3.5 metres long and wrapped around your waist a few times before being tied). The sashes go -> White, Blue, Orange, Green, Yellow, Purple, Brown and finally Black. As for a description of the Kung Fu animals, theres an OK section here -> http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.kelly627/And theres a section on the five regular animals and monkey/mantis etc. here -> http://www.shaolin-society.co.uk/Animal_Styles/animal_styles.php "We follow the World,The World follows Heaven,Heaven follows Tao,Tao follows the way things are."
