Goku39 Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 My next grading will be for 5Th Kyu. The kata for this grading is Heian Yondan. My sylubus book also refers to Taikyoku Nidan Ura. I have recently started training again after a break of 3-4 years & I cant remember learning Taikyoku Nidan Ura. What is this kata. Is it similar to Taikyoku shodan. Many thanks in advance.
Sohan Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 If its anything like our taikyoku nidan, it uses a middle block (instead of lower block) and then anupper block and middle reverse punch on the side series. Going down the middle there is a reverse punch before beginning the stepping so that you can perform the 270 degree turn into the middle block more easily. At least that's the way we do it. Good luck in your testing.Respectfully,Sohan "If I cannot become one of extraordinary accomplishment, I will not walk the earth." benyx Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 I just pass my 6th kyu exam in shotokan last week... so my next exam its for the 5th kyu too.. i also need to learn heian yondan too.. but we dont have taikyoku nidan in shotokan... you add URA in the name.. maybe its like ten no kata ura.. ura its for the kumite version.. (i think).. Oss.. Benoit Bouthillier (6th kyu)Seishin Chateauguay Karate-Do- Awesome Gi at http://www.tokon.com
ps1 Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 benyx,Taikyoku nidan is in Shotokan. Many instructors choose not to teach it though. The same goes for Taikyoku Sandan. The pattern is the same as Taikyoku Shodan, but with the changes that Sohan mentioned above. Ten no Kata is completely different. I suggest buying "Karate Do Kyohan." It is the "master's text" for Shotokan and was written by the system founder... Gichin Funakoshi. You can get it just about anywhere books are sold. Good luck on the test and let us know how it goes. Goku39 Posted April 24, 2006 Author Posted April 24, 2006 Many thanks for all of you answers. I have just ordered a copy of "Karate Do Kyohan" & look forward to its arrival. Something I have just remembered, I think the reverse punch is jodan in taikyoku nidan & chudan in taikyoku shodan. What I cant remember is what the URA means.
