holytriforce Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Well am 16 years old, one month from turning 17 and I really want to take a matial arts. There are two martial art schools that I am intrested in and they are close by. Though I will be be only starting and i would like to develop my art that i choose which would likely take more than a year, which then i will probably have to go to college. My two choices are wing chun and shorin ryu karate, again i will probably have to change dojos in a year or two. I know Karate will be easier to find but i think im leaning more towards wing chun. Any suggestions? Here are the sitesWing Chunhttp://www.eleungwingtsun.com/instructors.htmlShorin-Ryu Karatehttp://www.ominekaratedojo.com/
danbong Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Take the one that interests you the most. ichi-go ichi-e 一期一会one encounter, one chance
Sohan Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 See if either of these styles will be offered at a dojo at your college or in the same town. Also, speak with the instructors at each of these clubs you list, explain your situation, and see if they have a recommendation. You may be able to make your decision based on how they react to you training with them for only a year and how helpful they are at helping you transfer to a club at college. jaymac Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 I can only restate what others have said, you need to try each class to see which one you enjoy because they are both very different styles. Good luck and keep us posted on what you chose and how you like it. A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.
Bushido58266 Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 this might help, alot of people choose wing chun to gain alot of flexability, its a very kool art (ive never tried it but ive seen many people at tournaments use it) shorin ryu is more for a self defense and is more strict style wise (meaning u look alittle robotic)but like the others said try out both and see what u like best "Bushido is realized in the presence of death""TapouT or PassouT"
