Sho-ju Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 I’m interested in learning Ten No kata, it’s not part of the shotokan I’ve learned but read a description of it, viewed a free online video and thought it would be good practice for my students. What I need to know is this description given on the link accurate? Is the video accurate? They're both different.http://www.wmma.com/index_files/tenokata.htmhttp://www.uga.edu/karatedo/video/tenno.kata.htmlWhat are some key factors to keep in mind when practicing this kata? Is a reaction hand used [when you begin to step forward does the non-attacking side go out in front as a reaction to the opponent]? How many different ways of performing this kata exist?Thank you, OSU!
G95champ Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Buy G. Funakoshi's book Karate do Koyhan the ten no kata is in it (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Killer Miller Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 I see some good habits in their videos, and then again I see some really bad habits too. Their bouncing rhythm drives me up a wall... Don't use these videos as examples - OK for comparisons, but not for good examples.- Killer - Mizu No KokoroShodan - Nishiyama SenseiTable Tennis: http://www.jmblades.com/Auto Weblog: http://appliedauto.mypunbb.com/Auto Forum: http://appauto.wordpress.com/

ps1 Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 I agree with KM about the rythm. arrrg. But it will give you a general guideline to follow. As far as key factors go: it's a relatively new kata. There's nothing to point out as far as bunkai goes. You know..."secretive" or "hidden" things. It's straight forward. But the Master Text explains all that. The pace should be as you would actually utilize the technique. Because this is precisely what the kata was designed for. Enjoy. "It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenius."
Sho-ju Posted April 23, 2006 Author Posted April 23, 2006 Someone wrote the video looked more shorinji then shotokan? I've been taught to move the front leg when using yakuzuki, I noticed the folks on the video moved their back leg out to punch...never put much thought into it...which leg do you move when powering out a yakuzuki?
Sho-ju Posted April 24, 2006 Author Posted April 24, 2006 I looked it up in Kyohan, it's different then both examples given in the op.
