Do you wear gloves when using a punching bag? Or will you eventually condition you hands without them?

I have scars between my knuckles from where a canvas bag ripped my hands up... I suppose after time you could build up your hands to resist something like that... but why? I prefer open hands/elbows in an actual street fight situation.

I never go bare knuckled on canvas. I mix gloves and BN on the regular bag so that my hands don't get too used to gloves. I like the gloves, though, for more reps. I suppose you can condition them to withstand BN punching, but you are likely causing irreversible damage to the joints and nerves over time.

Drithen, I was curious, what does your kanji represent?

Bushido; I left the "Kai" off, because I didnt want to make the image much smaller. The middle part is red because it kinda looks like a cross, and my organization is Christian martial arts. I like to read it as "Way of the Christ Warrior."

Very nice! It's great to be able to make that connection to your religion. Thanks for the explanation.

I don't use gloves, but I also use a wavemaster, not a canvas bag. If I used a canvas bag, I'd wear some sort of protection so as not to tear up the skin, but it would have as little padding as is feasible.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had to condition my knuckles for a long time so my knuckles don't really get cut anymore, but I used to use hand wraps.

The only reason I have gloves is to protect the other person from getting hurt, not myself.
