Those days were called the "golden age of karate." The sparring was with little padding, and usually had pretty good contact. Some of those gusy got hurt. Even with lots of control, when you are competing, you get excited, and the contact level is elevated.

Safety equipment has come a long way since those days. That is also a factor.

Ah I see. I would prfer the ''golden age''sparring than our sparring though.

What you also don't see is the control skillful practitioners have. I think that most schools afe cautious of untrained students getting hurt or even of lawsuits so they really limit the sparring.

Now even with the best of control, some punches and kicks will slip by. Ouch!

The sparring has definitely changed. With all the safety epuipment and rules and overcautiousness, it has allowed the genre to open up more to children and women, who would usually be opposed to harder contact with no padding.

I remember the good old days...two lines down the middle of the floor, facing each other, no pads, no refs, low ranks getting pummled by high ranks, and on and on. Oh yeah, there was also that concrete Armory floor. Good times.

It's good to go back to the 'old' ways of doing things from time to time. We spar like that at my karate club (as well as having competition orientated sessions where people wear pads) and it is great fun! Some people aren't keen on it but Sensei never makes anyone do anything they feel uncomfortable with. If someone wants to wear a mouthguard or whatever then that's OK. Most people prefer to go "old skool", though, as our Sensei is an "old skool" kind of guy.

My instructor is an American (& 9th Dan Kukkiwon) & prefers the "old School" way, too. Controlled techniques but contact as well. "When skin touches skin is where the contact stops," he says. So we don't pull the technique, you simply must have control. Ya gotta love it. :D

we have sparring night where we get geared up to fight with medium contact.

my instructor and i spar without gear pretty frequently and hes not worried about hurting me and hes not worried about me hurting him i'm quite sure. his control is inspiring. but yeah we spar with only gloves once a week or so.

be polite, be patient, be alert, be brave, do your best, respect yourself and others.

The club I go to allows "light" contact to the body and no contact to the head.

Pads are encouraged, but I tend to not wear them unless we are doing a lot of free sparring...I find my control is better that way...

When I say "no pads" that's none except a cup & mouth piece. Heck, I wear a cup while teachin'. ........Poomsae, even :D
