Okay so we aren't suppost to ask when our next rank test will be,but I've got a bit of a dilemma.

I need surgery on my wrist to remove a ganglian cyst (again!)

And my instructor had told me and the other green belts that he was going to try to get some one up here to test us by early spring since he is not a high enough rank to test us any more.Well that was two or three months ago and I'm trying to hold off having my surgery done untill after testing since I'll be out of commision for a month or two.

Is it alright to ask my instructor when the heck we are going to be tested so I can plan when to has my surgery done? :D Or should I just wait for him?

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of love, a spirit of power, and of self-discipline.

I think that your instructor would understand, and even be impressed, that you are willing to plan your surgery around your testing. Approaching it from a "I don't want my health to get in the way of my training,"wya, as you seem be seeing it, should be reason enough that it isn't bad etiquette.

I planned my surgery around testing. I did ask my instructor if I was testing. Then I told the doc when to do the surgery and why. Both understood. So, with something like surgery, I don't think your instructor will get upset.

Just wanted to add to the other comments by saying that since your instructor already said that you had an impending test, it is entirely appropriate to broach the subject of a date due to your surgery. It shows that you are responsible and respectful of him.

Just out of curiosity, what rank does your instructor have if he cannot test you at a kyu level?

Both of my instrucors are brown belts. Obviously this is not a normal procedure in any dojo, but I live in a very small town and we don't have any cuong nhu black belts here. Our head instructor has been teaching for at least 15 years so she knows what she is doing :)

Thats a similar situation to our club. My mum is one of the club instructors and is Nidan (2nd dan black belt), she has been doing it for ten years and has been a black belt for around 5 years, so should be higher than she is.

However she had knee surgery and is not at her fittest, not quite fit enough to grade. She is now finding that other black belts she taught are passing her - and hence she can no longer grade them. Its awkward for her as she is mentally completely at the top of her game.

What happened with the testing? Did you get an answer? Are you going to IATC in Gainesville next month?

White belt mind. Black belt heart.
