Shotokan Competitions

:x I was talking to my Sensei last night about competition sparring (not that im going to be doing it for a while as im still a low grade). I found out that in the competition sparring you can't use grapples or holds! Im not sure about any other styles/competitions however this kinda annoyed me as you spend all this time learning the techniques but won't be able to use them. I'm a big guy so grappling and holds, would bring the match to my speed.

Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.

Hence the reason why i dont compete and enjoy the traditional aspect, but it all comes down safety of people and annoyingly, insurance companies..

Im a big guy too, and i enjoy using those techniques and sweeps..

If you wheren't so far away i'd say we could practice together although the other side of the world is a long trip for a few hours sparring

Was at an open comp in February which was predominantly Shotokan - the sparring didnt look too great at all. Yes the point system worked well but it was literally about getting one strike in at a time. Was odd

and dull, although i've watched our two sensei's spar (father and son) and i have to admit that one strike at a time would have been good.

Simo, when I go to Australia on holiday, i'll let you know.

Sure we could have a Karateforum sparring holiday. Or we could all go to Sydney harbour and sit in the sun.
