I'm joining a gym in my area, and it offers various MMA styles, including Muay Thai and BJJ. Do those 2 compliment eachother? I thoguht they would be a good combo because you could be good standing up and on the ground. also, is it hard to train both at the same time? would it be best to do one at a time? thanks :)

Depends on what you want. I'd go for the BJJ first, but that's just me.

I belive you can train both at the same time. You will proabably start to favor one and when that occurs you can devote more time to that stlye and just keep the other sharp. Thats my advice.

DJmma, for what purpose are you training? To compete? For self-defense? Muy Thai and BJJ to me are 2 extremes. Muy Thai is a brutal striking, stand-up art and BJJ is Jujitsu which means it's a gentle art. BJJ has degrees of force that can used depending on the situation. Muy Thai on the other hand is primarily to beat the crap out of someone. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't see a real reason for Muy Thai if you are not going to compete. I suppose if you really enjoy doing it, I can understand that. But personally I don't want to take a beating every time I go to class. Jujitsu is too much fun for words.

Good luck with whatever you do. Just don't take too many shots to the head.

:)

tree, I am not totaly sure where i want to go with it...but for now I want it for self defense, and fun. So i thought muay thai would be good. I like vigourous workouts, as i play water polo and swim, and ive always wanted to get good at some martial art. I took TKD when i was little but soon got bored of it. I want to take something more seriosuly now. I guess you could say I want something more...realistic and I thoguht muay thai would be good. then i thought, but i dont only want to be able to fight standing i should learn ground fighting. so i thought BJJ would be a good choice. Id basicly like to be a good fighter and have fun at the same time. I just like doing martial arts. even with TKD i had fun and I did have a certain amount of natural talent being i am athletic. I admit im not very knowledgable about these styles, i just knew that MT is good for stand up and BJJ is good for ground.

Are you looking for something that employs weapons or at least teaches you how to deal with them? Believe me BJJ is enough of a workout for anyone. Have you ever consider a stand up Jujitsu? There some out there that have many strikes, but personally I feel Muy Thai and BJJ are like 2 extremes. It's almost like, well if I can't knock someone out by the time this goes to the ground I'll have my BJJ to save me. There's no in between. I like the idea of throwing someone without going down with them. Arts like Judo and Jujitsu I think blend better with BJJ. You already know how to punch and kick if you took TKD. Just my opinion. It's all fun stuff. :)

no, i am not looking for something with weapons. And i see what you're saying about stand up jujitsu and judo. Maybe a better combo would be BJJ and jujitsu or judo. But even thoguh I took TKD, i was young, like 10 years old, and the techniques didnt exactly stay with me, but Im sure TKD gave me a foundation. It's just that theyre so many options, its hard to make a decision. but i guess i can try them out. This weekend I will be going to a local gym that teaches MMA. They offer Gracie or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Submission Wrestling, Judo, Boxing, Jun Fan Gung Fu and Muay Thai. I can either take one at a time or do the MMA class and learn all of them together which might be good. I'll just have to try them out and see. I will keep jujitsu and Judo in mind. thanks for helping.

Hey, it's should be fun. That's the key. If it's fun you'll excel in it.

1. technically, bjj is judo. That is where is came from. Sure, judo is a jjj offshoot, but bjj is judo.

2. you won't get the crap beaten out of you every muay thai class. You will work extremely hard, but you get the crap beaten outta you when you compete and train for your fight.

3. muay thai and bjj go great together. Muay thai and judo do as well. Do them both, so you can be versed in both you stand up and ground game.
