CheekyMusician
It might be best to concentrate on one art to start with and train at that for at least a couple of years before you start cross-training, just to make sure you get your technique correct, instead of mixing lots of arts from the start and not getting the technique 100% right in any of them.If you definately want to cross-train from the beginning, it might be best to pick arts that are a lot different from each other. This will make sure there's no confusion between the two, and will also make you a better all round fighter. Karate and Tae Kwon Do are quite similar, but if you look into arts that are less to do with striking, such as Aikido or Judo, they might be good to cross-train with. Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.

If you really want something different I would suggest an art that is heavy into weapons. That will improve your overall fighting ability for sure. Arnis is a nice weapons system.~BBB Training 14 yearsKalkinodo Blackbelt
jaymac
Talk to you instructor. He/she may really not encourage cross training at this point. Some do not like their students cross training at all. If you like the dojo you are with, stick to it for awhile and really learn the system. Then decide if you would like to begin your cross training. A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.
UseoForce
Train in a grappling style. Knowing 3 stand-up styles won't help you if you can't grapple, too. If it works, use it!If not, throw it out!
Whitefeather
Train in a grappling style. Knowing 3 stand-up styles won't help you if you can't grapple, too.I would agree, except for the fact that TKD is not really a "Stand-up" style. TKD is all awesome and fun (or so say they) and looks cool, but if you want to add to your bank of effective self defense/sparring skills and reflexes, go with grappling.Arnis is a nice weapons system.Heck ya!!!!!! But, you do not need to go to a arnis school to learn how to use them. Go to library and pick up as many books on arnis/escrimas that you can find, then place holds on all of the others. Pick several good drills to practice, and practice those, preferably with a partner. Weapons are great fun, and, in the case of escrimas, quite usefull, but you will not get half as much from learning the escrimas at a dojo as you will from learning grappling at a dojo.Happy Dojo Hunting!!David "Between genius and insanity, there lies a fine line. Blackbeltblonde
LOL Whitefeather... Honestly it all boils down to what you really want to accomplish. I CAN grapple and I can teach grappling.. but I don't like it and I'm not the best at it. However, I know I will be fine because I understand weapons and balance. ~BBB Training 14 yearsKalkinodo Blackbelt
