UseoForce Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Teaching yourself anything is not advisable. Even if you don't hurt yourself (and you will) your technique will probably be bad without an instructor to correct you. For starters, I think your workout could use some tweaking. Go to the Health and Fitness forum, there are some knowlegable guys there that can help you out. You are very lucky. You live in New York. I bet there are 100 different martial arts styles within 20 minutes of your home. You sound like you are very into acrobatics. Check into Capoeira. It's a Brazilian martial art that looks a little like break dancing, but it does have some great fighting techniques as well. Good luck ! If it works, use it!If not, throw it out!
Spirit At Choice Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 I think acrobatics may be a good avenue for you. You might also check into circus training. They often have summer camps that will teach you a lot in a minimal amount of time; and it's all the coolest stuff. But I must agree with Use of Force: please learn under an instructor. There is *so* much more to it than first appears.Best wishes!!! I hope you have lots of fun!!! White belt mind. Black belt heart....Rejoice and be glad!
JusticeZero Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 *shrugs* I do enough Capoeira that I teach classes, and I have never done ANY of those things. Well, maybe except for the front hand thing, though i'm not quite sure what that is. Could you be a bit less hasty about the flipping=capoeira association? Because the only people I know who bother with that sort of thing are TKDers who want to do forms competition. "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." - Baleia
Night Rider Posted March 29, 2006 Author Posted March 29, 2006 Capoeira ? imma search a lil about that certain topic/style...idk if i wanna get into the circus stuff, because thats like mega super ultra giga balance (lol), but you havent done any of that? here, let me specify:-Arial => a sideways flip, instead of vertical its horizontal-Kick-Up => laying on ground on back...pump legs and use arms to pop self up quickly gracefully and efficiently (previously posted)-Front-Hand Plant => a frontflip but the hands touch ground and push self up (while front-flipping)-Back-Flip => (is this nessisary? lol...lmao did i even spell it right?) jumping backwards and landing on feet-flip off wall => just basically a backflipi understand ill eventaully get hurt, and i understand having a teacher is VERY nessisary...but im trying to make up for that, because this is a hobby to me not a career. (dont you get it!???! im sick of playing games! =D)im thinking of making it up by using friends, internet forums, internet videos, internet samples, ect. and im not just gonna look at it, im gonna study it...= /and btw, yeah there ARE a lot of places in New York that teach things like that, but like i said ^^=Doh yeah, i think im healthy and in shape and fit and stuff...i just want as many resources and stuff like that uk what i mean? Azmyth Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I don't think your in the right place honestly, although some martial arts have a tiny bit of this type stuff incorporated for "show", you sound more like you want to get into gymnastics than martial arts. "Fear does not exist in this dojo does it?"
Youkai.no.Tamashii Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I don't think your in the right place honestly, although some martial arts have a tiny bit of this type stuff incorporated for "show", you sound more like you want to get into gymnastics than martial arts.Exactly. If you don't want to get into the "Arts" of martial arts, then you shouldn't start it. Karate isn't about fighting or showy techniques, it's about self defence, inner strength, and heart. | Panther's Den |akireru hodo kimi o omou yosore dake de boku wa mitasarerunakanai de, itsu datte aeru yohitomi o tojireba...
jaymac Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 I agree with others. I don't think martial arts is the place for you. You are not interested or serious about the training it takes in Martial Arts. Maybe gymnastics is a good place for you. They are extremely acrobatic, flexible, and strong. A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.
JusticeZero Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 -Arial => a sideways flip, instead of vertical its horizontalNever done it.-Kick-Up => laying on ground on back...pump legs and use arms to pop self up quickly gracefully and efficiently (previously posted)I'm familiar with it. I don't do it, and didn't learn it in capoeira. I use role instead, because it works better and is much better defended, though not as flashy.-Front-Hand Plant => a frontflip but the hands touch ground and push self up (while front-flipping)I do variations on this, but not the two hands together/two feet together thing you're likely imagining. Though I could if I wanted, it violates several principles of corpo fechado - basically, it's too vulnerable so we don't do it.-Back-Flip => (is this nessisary? lol...lmao did i even spell it right?) jumping backwards and landing on feet-flip off wall => just basically a backflipI've never done one and see no reason to. It doesn't seem to gain any tactical positioning that I see, and it's a ballistic, jumping movement, which we avoid like the plague. "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." - Baleia
Azmyth Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 I think lots of people get a false impression that acrobats and martial arts go hand in hand. When, its more of hollywoods way of making martial arts more entertaining. I will admit a martial artist who can do flips and stuff looks really awesome and appealing, but its not practical.. so schools don't teach it. So, if u want to learn martial arts.. your in the right place, if you want to learn how to do flips.. either check out gymnastics or cheerleading. "Fear does not exist in this dojo does it?"
