Does anyone here actually spar all-out with kamas, bo staves, or nunchaku?

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

Not with real a real bo. I use a 6 foot length of pvc.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

i've done it with a bo....but not kamas....since we use the razor sharp ones instead of the flashing tournament ones....i've also worked out with swords....which wasn't too smart....if i wouldn't go all out with kamas why would i do it with a razor sharm katana? But I did and ended up slashing my finger open all the way down the side.....my lesson for wielding a sword with out a cross guard or hilt! And i haven't went all out with nunchuku either.. i would think that we would just get all tangled up and quickly go to hand to hand combat anyway.

I'm glad to hear some people actually do traditional weapons sparring. When I first got into martial arts, I remember talking to a person about the "weapons" division in a tournament. Isn't it sad how when one hears the word "weapons" associated with a tournament, one automatically thinks of a form done with a weapon. Why train with it if you're not going to really learn how to fight with it?

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

I've sparred with Jo, Bo, Bokken(Both Katana length and Kodachi length together), Sai, and Escrima. My katana length bokken broke in a strike, and while holding them with the broken one, used the kodachi length one to make a strike. But I must say that weapon sparring hurts.

I have sparred with bo, bokken, and nunchaku. It hurts pretty bad but it's a lot of fun, and certain weapons work really well against others. I use a padded training nunchaku and still managed to leave some pretty big welts on my training partner (he was using bo staff so I got hit a lot as well, but once I got inside it was all over.) Fighting with them is very similar to fighting hand to hand because they are so fast and natural to use.

We do full contact sparring with bo's, jos, nunchuku, long swords and shortswords by doing chanbara.

We use the actionflex equipment and that allows us to go at it pretty hard. if you have never worked out with their stuff you need to give it a try. You can see a few pictures of it on my site (https://www.capefearisshinryu.com) by looking in the Cape Fear Chanbara secton.

I think their homepage is http://https://www.samuraisports.com

i spare with Nunchakus, becouse of the power and the speed when skilled. i saw a clip of a man targeting an apple, as the classic bow vs. apple thing you know, but this apple stood on his wifes head. he ran towards her and*kablam*.

4 stiches and a terrible head ache, for him. he fell and hit him self in the back head.

seriously, nunchaku is THE weapon for close-med fighting.

the only thing thats negative against nunchakus, is that it is used in street fights. kids buying/crafting nunchakus becouse of respect. some even use em for strangling. :kaioken: some says its becouse of Bruce Lee movies, they got so popular in the streets.

but i suggest you train with em and see for your self. they are really magical. harmony. the flouting movements...the power. ;P

:) i love them!

Carpe diem. pick up the day like a flower, and you will get a bouqet of life.

Me and some friends get together every so often and spar with wooden swords, wear armour, and stuff like that. We have a bang-up time!!

They are not quite traditional weapons, unless you were in medieval Europe. Eventually, we are going to start quarterstaff fighting. :brow:
