whats your favourite guard

what does everyone feel most comfortable like in fights or sparring

i have me hands open like a knifehand strike because i find fists hold me back and its easier to fight with my hands open. however, there is only one other person in my dojang that fights the same. am i going wrong ?

I personally like hands guarded up and open w/ the palms facing in the general direction of my opponent. One of the reason i like this is because of speed. I can throw a punch and close my hand right before impact which is much quicker and uses less energy than punching with a closed fist starting from the garded position. Another reason i like this is because it easier to block, shouto etc with the hands already open.

Nothing beats the basic boxing stance, with slight modifications (For NHB or kickboxing, for example) and any minor adjustments for body type, etc.

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

My favorite block is the shotokan stomach block :). I too make a fist before impact, but only for the first blow because I don't find the point of opening and closing my hand..

Depends on the situation. In point sparring: I grew up a boxer, long before my "martial arts" training. (I don't know if others concider boxing a martial art, but I do) I like using my boxing gaurd. In a street fight: I grew up with 7 other brothers, experience always says go to the ground. It is hard to grapple with fist :brow:

When in a confrontation I use 'The Fence' (Geoff Thompson) and from then on I'm either walking away, attacking or covering, in which case I'd use 'The Crazy Monkey' cover (Rodney 'Chico' King).
