dafabe Posted April 15, 2002 Posted April 15, 2002 Pride (the feeling) This whole grading thing has become a thing of ego and and pride, people haveing to show one and other how good they are, despite what people may say it is basicly people showing off and the "respect" that is to shown to higher ranking students in some MA classes is taked to far. In my opinion respect should be shown to all students in class equally, someones ability in the MA class does not make them better or worse than anyone else, it is your whole life that makes you the person you are, not just how good you are in the dojo. I can understand that pride is something within us all and in some ways I would like a grading system in thai boxing so I could feel like I am moving up and feel better about myself, but at the end of the day I know when I am doing good and the only reason I would want a belt is to let evry one else know. I went back to my first Mauy thai class in years last week and all the students were great they were friendly and helpfull and trying to include me as much as posible, giving sparing tips etc. I am not saying all clubs have the wrong atitude but definatly alot do. Phantasmatic Posted April 15, 2002 Posted April 15, 2002 i do agre with you Dafabe. I do know some Black Belts that are so incredibly arrogant it makes me sick. They are so full of themselves because they think they can defeat anyone!!! I know for a fat that can beat at least 3 out of 5 of our black belts at our dojo! It makes me angry!! "Which one is more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?" - Obi Wan Kenobi
Strife Posted April 15, 2002 Posted April 15, 2002 I had that problem to when I started actual training with a "Dojo" so to speak. I had been training on my own for a couple of years and wasent a puchover. I mumbled somethin' to the instructor 'bout me bein' able to take me and he took me up on it. I surprised myself by putting him on the floor. Then by doing it to a "BlackBelt"! I cant remember who said it be the quote is "It is to the deep sight of blood to knock over something built at an odd angle". Anyway Im just sayin' that the best way to stop ppl like that is to knock them flat on their blackbelt-high-and-mighty-arses!!!! However, this is merely just my OPINION. Shoto Tiger Posted April 15, 2002 Posted April 15, 2002 I remember seeing somewhere else that some dojos don't even go for gradings anymore, for this very reason. They are independent ones so are not tied into a 'traditional' organisation. Some dojos just do the belts for the kids, as it means more to little children than adults to show mum and dad how well they have done. I think MA is about challenging oneself, not others. You can use others as a benchmark I suppose, but the achievement at the end of the day is your own. No one else learnt to perform that kata till you went dizzy, no one else blocked that punch in time. I agree with you dafabe! A person is the sum of their previous experiences, not some one to be shaped into what everyone else thinks is right. Very good post Melanie---------------Be nice if I get this right one day...
dafabe Posted April 16, 2002 Author Posted April 16, 2002 Thanx for your input people. "perfection, is something we all get closer too with training, but you will never get there and untill you accept this your mind will be limited in what you can achive"- Dave
TKD_McGee Posted April 16, 2002 Posted April 16, 2002 "I can beat up a black belt.." Thats funny, I just never let ranking get to me. Its not a big deal, some people abuse their ranks but they are usually little kids. I don't think its as big of a deal as you say. And if it is your probabily going to a poor school that allows that kind of stuff. Do unto others, as they done to you.
bjjbarbie Posted April 17, 2002 Posted April 17, 2002 i think the most proud feeling i got was when i was preety much newbie to martial arts...and i entered into a judo competition.......anywho...this 2o something year old brown belt judo chick comes upto me and sais " u do realise ur up against two black belts dont you????" ....... ....and the funny part of the story: I BEAT HER!!! hahahhaha!!! she left the room furious and was crying outside.....!!!! boo!

I do not do any sort of ranking, at my club and yes if it was like that it would be a poor school, but that is my whole point, that there are so many places that are like this, and it is expecially worst for kids who start a new club and get this sort of atitude. Iamnotworthy Posted April 17, 2002 Posted April 17, 2002 Someone said this to me once and it stuck in my head. "Not all Black Belts are Equal, some Black Belts are more equal than others!" This is so true. Just wanted to share that with you guys.
