Art or Science??

Recommended Posts

When I was in the early stages of my traditional martial arts training, I viewed much of what I was taught as an art but the longer that I trained, the more I realized that there was a science behind of it.

What works works

i look at it as ART, of course there is science behind it but like any other art, the artist doesn't need to know the governing laws of physics. i just remember once somebody said " acording to laws of aerodynamics bees can not fly, but bees doesn't study these laws and they have been flying for thousand of years"

It is an Art and a Science. The science studying the mechanics of the body and its reaction to outside forces. In a sense, I do think that it is an Art form. Especially your chinese styles. Beautiful.

A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.

Martial Art is an art and science as well. But some of the trainings in a particular form of Martila Art such as "Kung Fu" involves "mind over matter", which is illogical, with reference to what is rational. There is also a form of Martial Art, which is really science at work, it has something to do with speed, monemtum, balance, proper body weight shifting, footwork and timing. This is "Aikido". Most martial arts students, teachers or enthusiast were all fascinated and had a passion about it and that makes it an Art. While pursuing and seeking to know or be able to learn a particular form of Martial Art. You have to study it, do research and seek help from qualified individual and all these are "Science", in it's basic form and nature.

American Kenpo is totally science. The end. I use physics and anatomy all the time.

I would consider my style as part of both. The JKA has applied a lot of kinesiology to there style. however, since I study with a Sensei who is Japanese and studied under Funakoshi himself, he has made it a life style and tries to instill that "Art" into us students.
