jaymac
Max, there really is no alternative. If you are serious about Kendo training, you are going to want to be with someone who specializes in it. You may get lucky to find a school where the head instructor has training with katana but may not advertise it. In our school, in order to train with katana, you have to be a black belt student. Ask around. Tell the head instructors what you are looking for in training. If they can't help you, maybe they know someone who can. A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.
red dawn
right now i'm learning the bokken at my aikido school. Though some schools do get around to using a katana. But becareful, not all aikido schools spend a lot of time teaching the katana. So, if you look into that make sure they really teach it. I never said it wasn't dangerous. Meguro
Don't limit yourself to kendo. Iado, kenjutsu and also aikido teach you different aspects of using a Japanese sword. BTW, katana refers to a live blade, which is rarely used in training because 1) it's dangerous to train with live blades 2) they're quite expensive and the edges are easily knicked. An iato, on the other hand, is unsharpened, less expensive and quite sturdy. It is used in iado. Google these different arts and see what's in your area. isshinryu5toforever
There are a few styles of Korean Kumdo which are deviations of Kendo, but those are few and far between. If your closest Kendo place is two hours away, I would tend to doubt that you're going to find Kumdo near you. He who knows others is wise. elbows_and_knees
kendo and iaido go hand in hand. iaido is the art of drawing the sword. This is where you will learn katana kata. kendo is the application side of it. This is where you will fight in armor with a shinai.

Obviously in this day and age no one needs to know how to fight with a sword so Kendo and Iaido have a strong emphasis on the perfection of character and technique (the same could be said for all of the do arts). Only by contrast can we see
