Taking it to far

Not alot of depth in this topic, however there is a cause for concern for myself.

Recently like other MA, I've been constantly thinking about my training.

Unfortunatly I think I'm taking it too far and I actually ended up training at 2am for kata, its interfering with my non-shotokan life also. Perhaps theres a way so I dont have to be addicted to my training?, any thoughts?

The time That you do In MA, Deduct some time after every training and eventually upto 2 hours a day,

I was thinking about this topic a few days ago.

Years back, I read an article about a person who was training so hard that he was constantly in pain. He was being held together by Ace bandages and asprin. His point was that he was training so hard that he was in too much pain to defend himself, which was part of the reason he was training.

I was exactly like that when I was preparing for my black belt back in 1996. I was training so hard that on weekdays, I could not lift my leg above knee level for the first half of the day. I read that article and realized that I could not defend myself because I was so stiff due to over exercising and stretching.

Defenitely cut back on your training. Go out and hang out with some friends at a coffee house. Family and friends are FAR more important than training. Your training will always be there for you, but your friends and family will move away, grow up, or even pass away. Spend balanced time with them and continue to train in the martial arts.

I think you'll know when you're training too much. 2am is probably a bit much. I personally think the obsession part's not so bad - so long as you get enough sleep, and rest time (to build those muscles!). Although when you're right into it, you don't want rest time...

Anyway, I don't know if I can offer any advice - it depends entirely on your personal and work relationships - if you're lucky enough to go out with another (obsessive!) practitioner it helps!

I do have an opinion because I have been thinking about this recently also. If you inadvertantly turn your back on your friends and family to train, what is going to happen when you cannot train anymore. I have been doing nothing but karate, work, sleep. My spouse is tolerant but I think getting sick of it. I thought "what if I wasn't married anymore because of my devotion to train, and then something happened that I couldn't train anymore due to whatever" I would be alone and it would be my fault. I love karate, but I have to live my life outside of the dojo too.

A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.

I only train durring the actual lessons, and when I get any spare time i.e. i can't go out coz it's raining, or I have nothing important left to do such as homework.

Total I usually train at least an hour a day in MA but about 3 hours a day in general physical fitness.

Do what I did:

Make MA your life. As a full time MA instructor, I'm immersed in it all day and know one can say anything about it. It's just what I do!

Unfortunatly I have plans for furthering my career in aviation, so I cant make that big of a choice.

But yea thanks for all the advice from everyone!

Your devotion to your chosen style has to be respected by the people who share your life. At the same time you have to respect their respect for your chosen path and cut down a little of your training to accomodate them, i.e. Give and take.
