depends...is harm imminent? Can you flee? Are there witnesses?

Be Ready To Fight In Your Mind and If He Shoves You I Beleive That You Have Every Right to Defend Yourself. If he is bigger than you and you think he may be a bit much to handle you should attack him but if he isn't too much stronger than you put him in some kind of hold. ( I like the Five Sec sleeper Thataway if he tries to resist you can just squeeze and he'll calm have to calm down.) The less you hurt him the better. Beating the pulp outta someone isn't worth paying for mouth reconstruction or any of other possibilities including death.

Don't show that your getting yourself pumped up inside, and when he goes for you then floor him with a single strike.

If he doesn't go down then just do your best to drop him coz he'll be pretty pi$$ed off.

Tell him that you do not want to fight and try to walk away without immediately turning your back on him. Do not attack him first. I would at all cost avoid confrontation unless he actually forces it and tries to strike you. Sorry if that isn't the answer you were looking for, but I believe MA is for self defense only.

id wait for him to attack cause if you attack him first he can press charges

and i study bushido so you have to keep combat in your mind 24/7. remember, the world is a potential enemy

In the real world, I don't think fighting is the answer. I think the best way to view this is to see if there is some way for you to walk away without any fighting happening at all.

If you do fight the other person, there could be a friend that's just around the corner, or they could find you again and bring their buddies back with them so that it won't be one on one it will be three, four or five on one.

The reason I say this is because up until last year, I was quite happily doing the martial arts and in fact I do three of them and I was thinking, it will be nice when I get to black belt because I will feel capable of defending myself effectively. I am a woman in my mid thirties.

Well, for some strange reason, I've had a few run ins with unsavoury characters. I will mention three of them but unfortunately there have been more.

First was the guy that moved into the flat above me. Let's just say that at 4 am on a Friday night/Saturday morning, a guy showed up and tried to kick the front door in. The people upstairs let him in and he ran up the stairs and started attacking one of them. I only had a very thin wooden door to my flat and he could have very easily kicked it in. I was lucky though because I was not the target and I moved out the next day.

Second I was walking home and suddenly 3 teenage boys appeared with a phone (I think these are known as happy slapping instances). I again was very lucky, because they had decided that they wanted to hug me. However, I told them no very sternly and stormed off down the street. I went to my neighbours because I was shaken up and then as I was talking to him, the teenage boys then attacked another boy and hit him.

Third, occurred today, two boys, maybe 10 years old, were walking along and one of them was carrying a stick. The one with the stick said 'hey' very rudely and I looked at him. He then said 'hey' and I continued to look at him. As I didn't stop looking at him, but didn't say anything then he walked passed me. Only after he had walked a bit of a distance did he then shout 'hey, give me your ****** bag', but I just kept walking and then they were gone.

I am not that high in the martial arts, but I know of big meaty guys that I wouldn't mess with (who have very nice personalities but you wouldn't know that if you hadn't met them before) and they have been beaten up because they were blindsided by attackers.

I think if there is a way to avoid violence then that is the best solution because you just don't know what could happen next.

I get in this stance that my wing chun teacher showed me, where the left arm holds the right elbow and the right hand is stroking the chin. You look open and tentative while in it, and it leaves many options for defense against a strike.

If someone is threatening you, there are numerous steps you should fill before you resort to "Dropping" the bad dude. Firstly, make a huge, melodramatic show of the fact that you are entirely in mortificated fear for you life by shouting/screaming, as physically loud as possible, "OH MY GOWSH, PLEASE DON'T HURT ME, AHHHHHH, SOMEBODY HELP ME, AHHHHHHHH, HE HAS A KNIFE, AHHHHHHHHHHH, HEEEEELLLLLLLP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!," or something along those lines. When you do this, not only will EVERYBODY in the ENTIRE area suddenly look in your direction, they will all see that you are in fear for your life, which is being threatened by an evil attacker, thus the attacker will be detterred by all of the negative attention, and, if you do have to physically defend yourself, and if you have to go to court about it, you will have a knee-load witnesses that saw some evil dude try to attack some innocent dude/dudette that cried for help, but had to defend (him/her)self. This is the most effective first-line self defense system. Another similiar tactic, if it appears that evil-dude is rather concrete about his intentions of doing you severe bodily harm, then, with all your muster, belt out "STOP". This will have the same effect above, drawing attention; but it is also very effective at causing the attacker to freeze for a split second, a time period which you can use to gauge the situation, and, if necessary, take the defense to the attacker, to use a hacknyed expression. This STOP technique is also an excellent precurser to the above "OH MY GOWSH!!" technique. Your voice is an incredible weapon, one not to be underestimated.
