lordtariel Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 One of the senior students demonstrated the use of the boat oar in our kobudo class the other day. It was truly awsome... Anyone here have experience with using one? Thoughts on it's effectiveness as a weapon? Is it hard to learn? Anyone know where I could find some video of various katas? It's definitly something I'd like to work my way up to. There's no place like 127.0.0.1
Brandon Fisher Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 What you saw is known as an Eiku. I have seen it done many times but never had the opportunity to learn it. Hopefully one day I will. Brandon FisherSeijitsu Shin Do

More for show / cultural, I'd rather have a stick. Is it hard to learn? Define "learn" Anyone know where I could find some video of various katas? Not sure, I've seen a few advertised. lordtariel Posted March 23, 2006 Author Posted March 23, 2006 Thanks for the replies. By learning, I mean is the use of the weapon both in kata and combat difficult? Do I need a lot of training with the bo in order to be effective with it? There's no place like 127.0.0.1
AdmiralBob Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 I've always wanted to learn that weapon too. I've used one a couple of times, and as far as I can tell, its similar to using a bo.

The small end is used to jab at the opponet, and the large end to hit. The large end was also used to fling dirt into the enemy's eyes. That move is actually used in most katas. Blackbeltblonde Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 Boat oar.... Long time ago Miamoto Musashi (sp?) used a boat oar widdled down to resemble a sword and fought and won a sword battle in something like 3 strikes and killed the guy.. and he was drunk. You should check out the story, it's pretty sweet. So effective?.. Heck yeah!~BBB Training 14 yearsKalkinodo Blackbelt
AndrewGreen Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 A boat oar hacked down to a Bokken is not the same as fighting with a full sized oar. Nor are stories of the ancient masters without exageration. Andrew Greenhttp://innovativema.ca - All the top martial arts news!
Brandon Fisher Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 I found this searching around the net not long ago. This is Sensei Buntoku Ifuku, 8th Dan Shorin Ryu - Shorinkan performing an Eaku kata.https://www.eastcoastkarate.net/Videos/ifuku.wmvThis was found on https://www.eastcoastkarate.net just so that they get proper credit.
